The key issue: Republicans showed up and voted.
I’m convinced a lot of Republican looked at the slate for the special elections (18 candidates, nonpartisan), said “you know, I’m OK with any of the top 4-5 Republicans in this race, I’ll just show up for the runoff.”
And they did.
