It can be pleasant believe it or not, once you’re acclimated. I was in my teens before my folks installed air conditioning. If your house is well-shaded with deep eaves and is old enough to have been designed for cross-flow of the breeze with the windows open, and particularly if it still has a whole house attic fan in the interior hall, it’s very comforting, to me at least. The night sounds, crickets, whippoorwills, owls. The night smells, some flowers really put on a show at night. All of this is assuming you’re out in an area where there wouldn’t be any concern about sleeping with the windows open. It’s too bad that anyone even has to think about that, and some places you still don’t.

I live in Arkansas and did not have air-conditioning until I was 12. My Grandmother had a 2nd story screened sleeping porch . I loved sleeping there. Wake up to the birds and put to sleep by the crickets and frogs. I built my 2nd floor oasis. Bedroom with french doors open to porch and feel like I am camping out every night. Plus monsters will be heard and I will be ready if they try to attack!! I live without traffic noise and lights, just nature.

Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Colorado and North Carolina. Under no circumstance move to Illinois with that fiscal mess. Side benefit . . . reduces California and New York electoral votes assigned over time too!
I’m not opposed to air conditioning, it serves it’s purpose especially in buildings that can’t cross-ventilate and in stormy weather when the windows need to be closed. But, we knew more than we knew at the time, sleeping porches, deep eaves, high ceilings, houses designed to catch a breeze and whole house attic fans need to make a comeback. It’s so much more connected to the world, to nature, it’s very pleasant and it’s cheaper in the long run, not to mention better looking than all these vinyl story-and-a-half houses that are dominated by the garage and deeper than the are wide.

I’m convinced that Virginia is not a lost cause. DC should be getting a comeuppance of sorts eventually under Trump, so the metastasis into northern Virginia will stall. There are some beautiful, even grand old towns in Southside VA that desperately need a boost. Beautiful old houses and land for cheap. Danville stands out first and foremost with Martinsville and South Boston not far behind.
