Seattle gun tax failure? Firearm sales plummet, violence spikes after law passes

But since the tax took effect, those costs have only risen as gun violence in the city has surged. And the tax has apparently brought in much less than city leaders projected it would.

“How much data do you need?” asked Dave Workman, senior editor of TheGunMag.com and member of the Second Amendment Foundation. “The data says the law has failed to prevent what they promised it would prevent.”

[Snip]

Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess introduced the tax in 2015. It puts a $25 tax on every firearm sold in the city and up to 5 cents per round of ammunition. The measure easily passed and took effect January 1, 2016. Comparing the first five months of 2017 with the same period before the gun tax went into effect, reports of shots fired are up 13 percent, the number of people injured in shootings climbed 37 percent and gun deaths doubled, according to crime statistics from the Seattle Police Department.

Councilman Burgess never returned calls and emails for comment.

Taxing guns this way is like putting in a poll tax.

Seattle is not that large a city. What this foolish regulation accomplishes is to put any gun shop within the city limits out of business.

If a Seattle resident wants to buy a gun, there are many gun shops in the surrounding cities.

It seems to me the Seattle gun shops could take legal action against the City for taxing them out of a legal business.

Yep. Every Liberal enclave, no matter HOW beautiful the surroundings, will eventually end up looking like Detroit and have the murder rate of Chicagostan.

No one says I have to live in any of them, but it is such a waste of time, lives and resources. And for what? For nothing more than POWER for high ranking members of the Socialist Democrat Party. They destroy everything they touch...and they’ve got to touch EVERYTHING.

*SPIT*

Quinn’s law. Liberalism always has an exact opposite effect.

It often appears that liberals live in a simplistic fantasy world but most of what they do is driven by the TWIN OBJECTIVES of (1) controlling people’s lives and (2) harvesting as much tax money as possible so they can buy votes. Those two reasons underlie everything liberals do.

I believe the real purpose was to drive out the gun stores in the city, not raise revenue or cut crime.

The swift failure and collapse of Obamacare is but one spectacular example that liberal programs ALWAYS have the opposite effect. From the get go most of us knew it would never work and that it would make a mess of our health care system.

As an aside, our family doctor decided to retire early and sell his practice rather than endure the oncoming onslaught of Obamacare regulations. Even though it was a problem for us, I agreed with his decision.

Like Stalin and Mao, the left is incapable of recognizing its failures and learning from them. It’s in the failure business.

So true. It is like the leftists who complain the USA boycott of Cuba has hurt the Cubans.

However, if Communism, Socialism, or Marxism is so fabulous, Cuba would have been highly prosperous without any contact with Capitalists.

Liberals love crime. It gives them more reasons to increase social spending and hire more government workers to “cure societies ills”.

Plus, liberals who live in gated communities love the idea of lower-income conservatives being beaten robbed and raped. It titillates them.

The fact that the same thing happens to a much larger number of their own constituents... well, that’s just collateral damage and gets back to the need for much bigger government and much higher salaries for limousine liberals.

I bet those who owned a gun store just on the other side of the Seattle county line really loved this.

Putting a tax on a constitutional right is like a poll tax which was struck down because it was unconstitutional.
The libs still refuse to understand that if the ruling class of any ilk force you to do something to use your rights, they then become privileges and can be taken away at their will.

Kind of like us gunowners that have to pay a stupid $200 transfer tax (or $5 AOW tax) stamp for Title 1 firearms under the NFA of 1934.

600k not that large? I guess that depends on your definition of large. But your main point is correct. They succeeded in driving out all but two gun stores (from within the city limits). The suburbs are doing just fine thank you.

Stalin, Mao, et al., intended to set up socialist dictatorships, not “workers’ paradises.” Ditto the modern Left. The “social justice” and other touchy-feely talking points are just to sell the Ponzi to the lower levels of the pyramid.
