Propane refrigerators are incredibly common in campers and RVs for many decades. My grandfather’s camper had one and that was at least 40 years ago.

On that type of unit, the propane is the energy source, not the refrigerant. Not likely the case here.

However, we have had propane as a refrigerant available since 2015 in the US.

From as far back as the 1920’s there were refrigerators that used natural gas. Serval is one brand I know of.
