Melania Trump is proving to the fashion designers who said they wouldn’t help her that dressing well is the best revenge.
The first lady’s trip to Saudi Arabia, the Vatican, Belgium and Sicily — wearing mostly Dolce & Gabbana — was a fashion tour de force that has forced many naysayers in the rag trade to rethink.
The list of designers who said they wouldn’t dress Melania is long, led by Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen, Christian Siriano and Sophie Theallet.
But Melania has managed to look smashing in dozens of different ensembles, from her white Ralph Lauren jumpsuit on election night to the D&G 3-D floral coat she wore in Sicily on Friday.
Defending the former model against critics who harped on the garment’s $51,500 cost, the Washington Post’s Robin Givhan opined, “Frankly, the floral coat is beautiful.”
“There is a softening, a melting,” stylist Phillip Bloch told me. “Fashion people are fickle and fake. They are starting to see she is a beautiful woman who is married to the president, and it is an honor to dress her.”
Deliveries to Trump Tower have picked up. “Most days, the lobby is brimming with wardrobe boxes delivered for Melania,” a source told me. “Once she tries on the outfits and decides what she will keep, the boxes come back downstairs.”
Not since Jacqueline Kennedy has there been a first lady who needs less help.
“She doesn’t need couture. She can buy off the rack, and it looks beautiful,” Bloch said. “She knows her size, and she knows what works on her. She luxuriates in minimal.”

Let’s see, you can have a first lady who ruins the school lunches of our nation’s schoolchildren. Or you can have a first lady who speaks Italian to a sick child while on a trip to Italy. Give me a millisecond to think about it....

Those designers who said they wouldn’t dress are were just bitter that she wouldn’t have chosen them in the first place.

I’m missing what was special in any of the dresses shown. Their bright colors are good for women of color, but beyond that?
Jackie had a serious shopping addiction problem. I read a book about her strange habits....she would walk into a store and buy the same sweater in every single color. Jack would go nuts over the shopping bills....and when she cleaned out her closets, there were heaps of unworn clothes all over the floor, many of which she would give away. She would shop and shop but not everything was worn by her.
Yes, some of those get-ups actually looked like they were pranking her just to see if she’d call them on it, or go ahead and wear them pretending it was the greatest. Quite a scam. Of course “dressing” someone of that shape could not be easy, but it could have been done in a flattering way.
“FASHION PEOPLE” totally suck. There is no one more anti woman than the (mostly gay male) fashion designers who consider humanity, safety, comfort and convenience ONLY FOR MEN. Women have nowhere safe to put valuables, nowhere convenient to keep their phones. Women are told they need to permanently disfigure their foot and leg and spine bones in order to be attractive.
The only people more hateful to women than fashion designers and ISIS are all our sister women who slavishly do and wear what these gay men tell us to.
I love beautiful clothing. But much of what fashion design is about is harmful or detrimental to us. When do we take the power away from them?
And Good on Melania. She always looks fabulous. Screw those prejudiced designers.
Had a friend disgusted Melania wasn’t wearing American and asked my opinion.
“Well, most American designers have publicly boycotted her and others are doing the same silently. What’s a girl to do?
She also seems to have a unlimited wardrobe budget and I don’t blame her for wearing French and Italian.
Personally, I love a few American Brands but, also European designers and while I’m not a girl, I’d just wear both”.
It hasn’t been long but I forgot the hideous “designer” getups Mooch would put us through.
Sheesh. All of that sh.. cost us a fortune.

As an MBA, my guess is the company gets a write-off on the article of clothing they send her. They reap the benefits from all the customers who purchase from them "because they saw" Melania wearing their designs. Their profits far outweigh the cost of a single garment sent to FLOTUS. As to what Melania does with the garment after wearing it - don't know, but it may wind up at the Smithsonian.
The wailing and gnashing of teeth you hear from the designers who chose to not do this for FLOTUS is because of the above: IOW, they're seeing a drop in profits as customers flock to D&G after the overseas trip.
