Federal immigration agents arrested 188 people in a five-day operation ending Wednesday that targeted criminal aliens and people who had violated immigration laws.
In the raids, carried out between Saturday and Wednesday, 146 Mexican nationals were apprehended, along with citizens of several countries in Central America, East Asia and Eastern Europe.
In total, 177 men and 11 women from 11 different countries were detained.
Nearly half the arrests, 93, took place in Los Angeles County.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported Thursday that 169 of the people arrested had previous criminal convictions.
Among those who had previous criminal convictions, 43 were for drug offenses, 27 for domestic violence and 30 for driving under the influence. Only three of the detainees had prior convictions for illegal re-entry. “Operations like this are emblematic of the vital work ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers do every day seeking to locate, arrest, and ultimately deport at-large convicted criminals and other immigration fugitives who pose a threat to public safety,” said David Marin, field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Los Angeles, in a statement.
ICE touted the arrests of a 29-year-old Salvadoran convicted of rape who had been previously deported; a 51-year old Mexican national who had served three years for cocaine trafficking; a 47-year old Mexican who had convictions for assault and battery and had been released by local authorities despite an ICE detainer request; and a 26-year-old Salvadoran who is a registered sex offender.
Detained immigrants who do not face criminal charges will be slated for deportation.
The raids were labeled a “targeted operation” against criminal aliens by ICE, although some arrests of potentially undocumented foreign citizens were made on the spot.
“During targeted enforcement operations ICE officers frequently encounter additional suspects who may be in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws. Those persons will be evaluated on a case by case basis and, when appropriate, arrested by ICE,” read a statement released by ICE.
