Full article title: "Melania and Ivanka wear black veils to meet the Pope at the Vatican after deciding not to wear head scarfs on Saudi visit (just like Michelle Obama) - as Pope asks the first lady if she's feeding Trump cake"

First Lady Melania Trump and the president's daughter, Ivanka, dressed in all black and wore veils to meet Pope Francis on Wednesday, just as former First Lady Michelle Obama did when she met Pope Benedict.

The women traveled to the Vatican on Wednesday with President Donald Trump, who was meeting with Francis for one of his most high-profile talks.

Trump, Melania, Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner were greeted in a Vatican courtyard by Archbishop George Ganswein, the prefect of the pontifical household.

Melania and Ivanka kept with tradition and wore veils to meet Francis. The veil, or mantilla, is traditionally worn by women as a sign of respect when meeting the Pope. Trump senior aide Hope Hicks wore one as well.

I like the Trumps, however, ladies don’t wear hats or veils anymore in church and doing so made them look dumb

I am not exactly sure what the pope thinks he accomplished by appearing so negative. In the night (EDT) immediately after the visit was concluded, the only picture I saw over and over showed the seated pope speaking to the seated president across a big desk. It looked like a school principal with a student he had called to his office. I don’t recall ever seeing such a picture of a pope with a visiting dignitary before. At least there are some other pictures.

Catholic women worldwide typically wore mantillas to church until the 1950s.

Or hats, or "doilies" until the 1970s in the US. I was living in Berkeley the first time I ever saw a woman in church without a head covering and it was the 1968. She was Dutch and there was a lot of whispering about it. People were saying things like "They stopped insisting on hats in Europe because everyone was so poor after the war." Silly, I know, but that is what the other women were saying and all of them kept their heads covered. Many Catholic women kept a circle of lace folded in their purses just in case they decided to stop in church in the middle of the week.

The veils are protocol for audience with pope.

Agreed... The Pope in that picture with all them facing looks like he wants to kill Trump.

I would not be pleased if two beautiful women looked at me that way.

Sure they do. Just not in your church. They do in mine...and we have a ton of young adults and even kids.

This pope is responsible for a good many Catholics taking a timeout with the Church. They reason that if this is where the Church is headed (i.e., where Francis is taking it), then they are not on board.

I remember, in my youth, older women from the other side, Italy, usually wore black all the time.

How nice to see these photos in the US. Of course, they're from a foreign source....thank you for sharing them.

I'm trying to find something definitive about if Melania was brought up in a religion, either culturally or in practice. I couldn't.

My point: Melania's scarf and dress were beautifully appropriate, respectful and traditional for an audience to the Pope. My devote Russian Orthodox grandma would've approved of Melania's choice. Ivanka, on the other hand, just can't help herself. Her hat looks like something one of the sillier members of the British Monarchy or a spectator at the Kentucky Derby would wear....it's all about her. The pearls and the slight low cut?....unnecessary and brings attention to herself.

JMHO.....as an appropriate and wonderful representative of our nation....First Lacy Melania is magnificent!

Not to worry. Probably has a bad case of ‘acita’ from eating Tripe and forgot to take his Brioschi. IMO

What do you expect? This pope is a socialist and muzzie apologist. Trump is one of his arch enemies, in his mind probably more so than Satan.
