Roger Moore has died aged 89.

A statement on his official Twitter read: "With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated."

Older fans remember him from The Saint TV series. That series was why Moore was chosen as Bond after George Lazenby declined the role after one movie.

He spoofed himself in the "Cannonball Run" movie, which was hilarious. He played Seymour Goldfarb Jr, who pretended to be Roger Moore.

Seymour Goldfarb Jr: [At the Goldfarb compound, Seymour greets his mother] Mother... I've trust you had a pleasant day.

Mom Goldfarb: A nightmare. A living nightmare. You are killing me, Seymour. Killing me a slow death with this idiot spy business.

Seymour Goldfarb Jr: Mother, you don't understand.

Mom Goldfarb: Oh, what is there to understand? I'm looking at my son, Seymour Goldfarb, Jr., son of Seymour Goldfarb, God rest his soul, and heir to the Goldfarb Girdles fortune. And what is he doing? Walking around, acting like he was some goy movie star named Roger Moore. And for this I sent you to the best schools? For this I'm spending eight thousand on orthodonture work? For this I'm going broke paying that Beverly Hills analyst? And now, ha ha...

[lifts the napkin, revealing Seymour's Walther PPK pistol]

Mom Goldfarb: ... this. The sleep-in maid found it under your pillow this morning. What is the meaning of this?

Seymour Goldfarb Jr: [icy as he grabs the gun] The meaning, mother dear, is a quick death. I've warned you not to interfere in my affairs.

Mom Goldfarb: [unconvinced; pushes the gun away] Seymour, put that thing away. It's liable to go off.

Seymour Goldfarb Jr: I'm terribly sorry, mother, but you know too much. You see, in my business, even the deepest family relationships aren't worth a farthing.

Mom Goldfarb: [still unconvinced] Farthing, smarthing.

[Seymour pulls the slide back and forth, then holds his mother at gunpoint]

Mom Goldfarb: [shocked] No!

Seymour Goldfarb Jr: Zie gezundt, mama.

[Seymour pulls the trigger, only to shoot out a flag that says "Bang!", thus revealing to be a fake gun, to his amusement; laughs]

Mom Goldfarb: [frustrated] Oy! Where did I go wrong?

Seymour Goldfarb Jr: You know something, mama? You're too Jewish.

(that's character actress Molly Picon playing his mother, BTW)

But he was the one and truly best James Bond.

Absolutely not! Sean Connery was the quintessential James Bond.

Yes, he was the Bond for the Silly years. He knew he wasn't a good fit for Connery's more cold blooded 007, and so he embraced the humor. But looking back at his movies, Roger Moore's Bond was occasionally pretty cold and brutal as well. Some of the better Bond moments are his. And in a time when lead actors were not expected to do stunts, he learned to ski after becoming Bond, to a very good level, and did ski in some of his movies.

James Bond Moonraker Space Flight Simulator Scene

In Moonraker, the bad guy tries to kill Bond in a G-Force simulator. The good thing about this scene is unlike almost every other time someone tries to kill 007, Roger Moore convinces the audience that 007 actually could die. And also unlike any other time his life was in danger, Bond doesn't shrug it off with a one liner. The fact that he says nothing at the end is beautiful.

For You Eyes Only - No Head for Heights

This is Roger Moor's Bond's most brutal kill, as cold as anything Connery ever did.

And finally, one of my favorite Bond scenes of all time. when Bond is trying to climb to the top of a Greek monastery, but is noticed by an evil henchman. This is probably the only other time the audience thinks there is a chance 007 could die.
