Nothing new here - the Cutter Taney which I served on board had ASW torpeado weapons installed. On my home page you can see them on the port side deck below the radar mast.
I recall being surprised in the mid 90's leaving San Pedro on the Avalon ferry, seeing the USCG cutter tied up at the station. It had a Phalanx CIWS mounted on the aft superstructure. This was a late model cutter, not an old destroyer.
Still wonder, why the CG needed a CIWS? Could see it in the Gulf of mexico for druggies, but SoCal?
