Texas Southern University cancels Cornyn speech in response to student petition

Concerns about an ugly student confrontation prompted Texas Southern University in Houston to cancel a scheduled commencement address Saturday by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate.

The decision at the historically black college comes amid a student petition demanding that Cornyn be blocked from speaking and urging that all graduating students and their families "express their discontent" if he does. By Friday, 863 people had signed the petition on change.org, an online activist petition network.

The school's decision comes amid a growing national debate about free speech on college campuses, following increasingly frequent student protests and several high-profile cancellations, mostly directed at conservative speakers.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was booed at a commencement address this week at Bethune-Cookman University, a black college in Daytona Beach, Florida. It also comes weeks after protests led a student group at the University of California at Berkeley to pull the plug on a speech by conservative commentator Ann Coulter. That decision followed clashes over President Donald Trump, and the cancellation of an appearance by right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopouloswas amid destructive student disturbances.

DeVos, amid heckling, boos, and gown-clad graduates turning their backs, could be seen on news footage Wednesday appealing for respectful dissent. "Let's choose to hear each other out," she said.

Cornyn aides said the decision to cancel his appearance was the school's, not his. "Sen. Cornyn was honored to be invited to address TSU's graduates, but he respects the administration's decision and looks forward to continuing to engage with the University in the future," said a Cornyn spokesman.

The conviction for corruption of Obama will signal the end of racial hatred.

It is time we pull all federal funding including the united negro college fund. I say put together a board with rules that universities must abide by and let the universities bring thier curriculum before the board to request funding.

They would probably prefer Quanell X, leader of the New Black Panther Party in Houston, Texas.

After 50+ years of picking cotton for the Democrats you’d think that blacks would recognize their slavemaster. Hint: It ain’t the GOP.

See my tagline. Deny these fascist colleges federal funding, and demand liberal speakers not appear for good measure until this crap stops.

Completely end all taxpaying funds and government involvement in education. All schools should be privatized.

Yet another school formerly known for ‘higher learning’, now afraid of their students and eager to be liked.
Why bother studying for a future career, when you can obtain material benefits right now just by complaining and acting out?

A school that is supported by the government, IS the government. Therefore, the government is preventing free speech.

All funds should be cut off. A private school can pick and choose what is said and by whom.

I’m pretty sure this school gets taxpayer dollars. If not, the freedom not to support the school shall not be infringed.

With all I’ve said, I can’t stand Cornyn but he should be allowed to tell his lies.

Higher eduction cannot teach manners. This is something you obtain in your formative years. It was disgusting what was done to DeVoss at the commencement and also this dis-invitation.

Cornyn may be fine with these affirmative action leeches who think skin matters more than brains, but the citizens of Texans are ashamed of this racist institution. All state funds to Texas Southern ought to be cut from the budget that the Texas legislature is working on at the moment.

There wouldn't be any Black people in university if it weren't for the act of white people.

The black race is totally dependent on the white race for survival.

Its rather sad.

Blacks are useful to White Liberals only because they vote in block, and can help swing elections.

The moment 60%-70% of White people vote Republican, the Democrat party is finished...as well as the protected startus of Blacks. It is possible that by the 2020 elections, Whites will vote 70% for Trump.
