Trump Warns Comey and Says He May Cancel Press Briefings
New York Times ^ | May 12, 2017 | PETER BAKER

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Friday warned James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director he fired this week, against leaking anything negative about the president and warned the news media that he may cancel all future White House briefings.

In a series of early-morning Twitter posts, Mr. Trump even seemed to suggest that there may be secret tapes of his conversations with Mr. Comey that could be used to counter the former F.B.I. director if necessary. It was not immediately clear whether he meant that literally or simply hoped to intimidate Mr. Comey into silence.

“James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter.

Mr. Trump appeared agitated over news reports on Friday that focused on contradictory accounts of his decision to fire Mr. Comey at the same time the F.B.I. is investigating ties between Mr. Trump’s associates and Russia.

Trump is letting the world know that he has this guy’s number.

That’s Comey the Corrupt’s problem - he’s been playing games since he got the job.

Trump knows it and is calling his bluff.

Comey’s been doing this to people above him for a long time. But primarily against Republicans. It’s his special abuse of power.

Trump doesn’t listen to basic advice, and that has worked for him.

Comey had to go period.

The top FBI people are handing information to the press, illegally and they won’t investigate themselves.

Trump has to learn to speak softly, because he has the big stick. Stop going on and on about it. Let it be done and say “no further questions”. They are looking for anything to hang him. If he crosses a legal line, it will be a nightmare, the Democrats will shut down the country in a heart beat.

Trump puts himself in jeopardy by talking to the press.

Just stop.

If you do not think that tweet was not vetted by a group of people you are very blind or a rino....and I have been no Trump fan.

That tweet did exactly what it was intended to do....DECLARE WAR...and tell DC that the administration has been preparing a case against the conspiracy that has been hatched to impeach Trump. That tweet has DC cockroaches scrambling today in terror...if it does not then they are absolute fools.

Tweeting is the Trump administration only bypass point of the propaganda MSM helping the conspiracy against a sitting US president. Think that through from every angle.

Sorry if Trump appears to be fitting into your never Trump stance. Presenting a NY Slimes article pulls absolutely no weight around here.

I agree. Comey is full of himself. He has a gentile demeanor but his words and actions betray. He is the unstable one.

Trump should get off Twitter. He sounds unstable, not what you want in a President.

You are so wrong here. When there were 3 television stations, the POTUS knew how to get the message out. Most people do not get news from traditional - and biased - sources. Trump needs to go directly to the people.

Mentioning “tapes” could be intended to drive the press into a frenzy because of the comparison to Nixon.

That would be, not what YOU want. Don't pretend to know what "sounds unstable" or what I want.

Trump should get off Twitter. He sounds unstable, not what you want in a President.

After Reagan won, but before he took office, he had associates who did business with the Soviet Union tell them that he had a bit of a temper, and might be unpredictable if crossed. In those days, the USSR was a closed society, and exposure of political celebrities wasn't ubiquitous like it is today.

That worked for a simpler era, when Reagan needed an advantage in diplomacy. Trump is doing it by living it. Like Reagan was, Trump will be portrayed as unstable by the media, and WE don't care, and our enemies will never be pleased. Those who are neither will get sick of all the vapors and hyperventilating. It is hard to think of Trump as a burn down the place Hitler type when he's hosting Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office, who doesn't have a scary word to say about him.

Trump is a different type of President, and his work today will make President Pence's job easier one day.

“Trump should get off Twitter.”

Saying he’s “unstable, not what you want in president” sounds like something from Mad Maxine, krazy Keef Olderwoman, Chuckles or any lefty shill.

I suppose the Bushes and any number of Kristol #nevertrumper neo-cons would agree with you—it’s frightfully “undignified” eh wot? Why, he should just let the uniparty 24/7 invective and pejorative lies go—roll with it. Like water off a duck’s back, yeah, like Dubya ... uh, no.

The MSM and its army of Winston Smiths spin the truth ten different ways, e.g. just yesterday here on the country’s premiere conservative web site: `Spicer was *hiding* in the bushes!’, and CNN called the president’s mauling of Lemon, Comey and others, all deserving multiple trips to the woodshed. “undignified”.
I won’t begrudge the president this one means of letting us know what’s really going on at the curtilage of the Swamp.

Tweet on Don. Give `em hell. Paddle them.

If our FRiends who find this unsightly need to, I suggest they tatoo “HOLD FAST” across the front of their fists and make sure to look at it every morning upon waking.

Support our CITIZEN president! This is truly an us versus them ALL situation. No time for space between the shoulders now.

I'm ok with his twitter usage, but some of what he posts does come across strange. The limitations of twitter can make posts come across... strange, and he has some that do come across that way. I would def limit its use.

I agree, his tweets are making things worse, not better. There are too many “Support everything Trump does or you must love Hillary” types on here.

Exactly so. The Trump haters need him to get off Twitter, so they can proceed with his destruction. And the ones who advocate he drop the Twitter sending are either fellow-travelers or fools.

Honestly, I don’t think there are tapes at all. I think he’s just saying if there are tapes it would prove Comey (who is leaking through “sources close to him”) is not telling the truth. That said, if there are tapes, Comey would only need to be afraid if he’s lying.

There was a time when I would have cautioned against such tweets. At this point, I don’t care. The media is going to attack him and accuse regardless. They have a substantial portion of the public convinced (without any proof) that he colluded with Russia to hack the election.

Look, while I am willing to admit if I’m wrong, I don’t believe Trump colluded with Russia to hack the election. Trump maintains his innocence, so from his perspective, imagine being accused of a crime you did not commit daily from every news outlet and paper sans Fox and a handful of conservative outlets. Imagine it. Then imagine that these people have millions of Americans calling for your impeachment and calling you a traitor over something you didn’t do. Imagine at that same point you are trying to run the country. I think anyone would be frustrated under that situation. Anyone. He’s trying to defend himself, but people don’t listen. Twitter is one way he can get around that press. I’m not going to judge because I can only imagine how upset I’d be in that situation.

See post 39.

That said, his media team is doing a terrible job right now which is leading him to Twitter. I have no communications degree and see areas where improvement can be made.
