Why Trump is stronger than he looks: Repeated polling reveals trends that single sampling does not

To paraphrase Mark Twain: Reports of President Trump’s political death “are greatly exaggerated.” Simply scanning approval ratings overlooks the many trends determining a president’s effectiveness and re-electability. Many of these favor Mr. Trump.

As his 100-day milestone passed, the president’s lagging approval ratings were frequently cited. Two major problems exist with this point-in-time comparative approach: the moment when it is taken and to what it is compared.

Considering the uniqueness of Mr. Trump’s campaign and presidency thus far, applying conventional measures to the unconventional is questionable. Rather than choosing just a single sample, an average over time offers a better view.

Rasmussen’s tracking polls of 1,500 likely voters provide 71 samples over Mr. Trump’s first 100 days. Averaging these, his approval and disapproval ratings are almost exactly balanced: Approval, 49.6 percent; disapproval, 50.3 percent.

Importantly, Mr. Trump’s first day approval rating was not wildly high (56-44 percent) — though certainly higher than his favorability rating during the campaign. Mr. Trump won the election with 46.1 percent of the popular vote, therefore losing 53.9 percent. Compared to the benchmark that elected him, Mr. Trump’s Rasmussen 100-day average handily beats it.....

I still maintain Trumps approvals/disapprovals are regional.

I live in California and can say with certainty at least 75% hate Trump and nothing will change their mind.

I think Trumps disapprovals are very high on the West Coast and the North East. I thinks Trumps approvals are very high in the Midwest and South. Ithink in the Rust Belt and Mountain West he is probably 50-50.

GOOD! Rejoice at the anger, hatred, and frustration of the left. Trump must be doing something right!

If you’re taking flak, you’re over the target! East and West Coasts? You’ve been warned. ;)

And another thing...did we have week-by-week analysis of 0bama’s ‘popularity’ ratings?

I don’t remember that happening every. single. week.

For eight-l-o-n-g YEARS!

Our POTUS is probably coming in at least close to 60% plus approval.

Our Congress critters are polling much lower since Paul Ryan & Co. is really in the Rat party and folks will not be able to take Ryan's smirks and incompetence too much longer!!!

The Rat party is probably in general is polling pretty bad right now but we will never know these numbers since the Fake News MSM will not say anything negative about their Rat friends.

I agree. The left uniparty side has limited themselves to racist minorities and the coasts.

Would be good to not disown large geographical regions. For example, Staten Island, one of the 5 NYC boroughs, voted for Trump. The “right” half of Long Island voted for Trump. Most NY counties north of NYC voted for Trump. And I’m sure there are similar scenarios in CA.

I love the nationwide county map that show’s Trump’s victory. God bless America!

Actually, I think Trump’s approval numbers are much better everywhere than the polls suggest.

Whom are they polling? Illegal aliens?

Many people refuse to answer, so polling results are not truly representative of the opinion of people in general.

I agree with you that trump is either very popular or very unpopular depending on the region you live in.

Trunp is taking care of the state’s that voted for him and he will do even better in the. The next election. Also he will be a sitting president and canard of the left that he was a non-serious joke candidate just won’t fly next time around. Trump will have a much easier time campaigning in the next go-around because the myth of unelectability woven by the media is broken beyond repair.

” Staten Island, one of the 5 NYC boroughs, voted for Trump. The “right” half of Long Island voted for Trump. Most NY counties north of NYC voted for Trump. And I’m sure there are similar scenarios in CA.”

Not the same scenario her in the Peoples Republic of Californis. The witch won all the coastal and metropolitan counties. Trump won only the small, inland farm counties. In fact Trump did so bad here, he lost Republican Orange County by 8%. No Democrat candidate in history had ever won Orange County. Trump also lost in tradionally Republican Ventura, San Diego, Fresno, Riverside and San Luis Obispo Counties.

NY will go red long before California will go red again. Even the white folks here are whacked out commies. It’s not my parents California....it’s not even the California of my youth.

So sad considering CA was once Reagan territory.

You have posted this before and who really cares if it is regional? Who cares? I don't.

The polls also called for Hillary Clinton winning and she did win the popular vote, too. Big deal.

The silliness of constantly insisting it is regional is a big fat, who cares?

EVERYTHING is regional. Who likes popcorn more? Who likes Spam more? Who likes LL Bean vs. Orvis? It is all regional.

Who cares?

Unfortunately, you have nothing to back up your biased hope and belief. He was elected president getting less votes than his opponent and is pummeled by the press every second of every day, so yes, I believe the polls. The polls certainly called the popular vote correctly, so I think the polls are correct with this, too.

Well, that is all fine, but you do understand that Staten Island has several hundred thousands of voters, while the other boroughs have millions. At least I hope you do.

You do understand it is not how many counties one wins, but the votes, correct?

It's terrific Trump won many more counties, but some of those counties have mere hundreds of voters while the dems win the counties that have millions of voters.

The polls certainly called the popular vote correctly, so I think the polls are correct with this, too.

The popular vote disparity was due solely to California, and the fact that the Democrats and Media were doing everything in their power to prevent an electoral landslide for Donald Trump.

Without California, Donald Trump wins the popular vote. Given the slant of the Media, the self-fulfilling prophecy they tried to concoct almost worked.

Additionally, the state polls in virtually all the "battleground" states were way off.

The Establishment was almost able to engineer a Hillary victory by using every smear tactic, character assassination, and propaganda technique known to man.

So, it's rather disingenuous to ascribe the polls much credibility, given the environment in which they were conducted and presented, and given that their sole intent was to manipulate public opinion, not report it.

They thought the fix was in, and they actually had it "rigged", but the American People—despite overwhelming demonization of Donald Trump—failed miserably...
