Those two and the hanging scene with Jake Spoon. Gus and Woodrow drew a hard line.

I love both Open Range and Lonesome Dove. I also love The Sacketts. It was a late-70’s TV movie based on the Louis L’Amour Sackett series and starred Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, Glenn Ford, and Ben Johnson.

I have a book called “Don’t Squat With Your Spurs On: A Cowboy’s Guide to Life”, and it is fun to read, just a whole bunch of quotes such as “Tellin’ a man to go to hell and makin’ him do it are two entirely different propositions.”

That one sentence soliloquy by Captain Call is spot on, said with all those people just staring open-mouthed at him: “I hate rude behavior in a man. I won’t tolerate it.”

LOL, after seeing that scene, well, no S*** Sherlock!

Indeed. It is a powerful scene, but...they did what had to be done.

In the book I referenced in my last post, there is a quote: “Never take to sawin’ on the branch that’s supportin’ you, unless you’re being hung from it.”

A friend once told me that if men refuse to lead, women will step up and take over and that is killing our churches and families.

Cowboys never worked together to corral a herd?

I imagine they are still around.

A few years back NatGeo did a story on them.

We used to have Country & Western music when I was growing up.

We’ve seen what’s happened to the ‘country’ side of it; but is there ANY ‘western’ music any more??

Cowboy Poetry
by Bill Jones

Jake, the rancher, went one day
to fix a distant fence.
The wind was cold and gusty
and the clouds rolled gray and dense.

As he pounded the last staples in
and gathered tools to go,
The temperature had fallen,
the wind and snow began to blow.

When he finally reached his pickup,
he felt a heavy heart.
From the sound of that ignition,
he knew it wouldn't start.

So Jake did what most of us
would do if we had been there.
He humbly bowed his balding head
and sent aloft a prayer.

As he turned the key for the last time,
he softly cursed his luck.
They found him three days later,
frozen stiff in that old truck.

Now Jake had been around in life
and done his share of roaming.
But when he saw Heaven, he was shocked --
it looked just like Wyoming!

Of all the saints in Heaven,
his favorite was St. Peter.
(Now, this line ain't needed
but it helps with rhyme and meter)

So they set and talked a minute or two,
or maybe it was three.
Nobody was keeping' score --
in Heaven time is free.

"I've always heard," Jake said to Pete,
"that God will answer prayer,
But one time I asked for help,
well, he just plain wasn't there."

"Does God answer prayers of some,
and ignore the prayers of others?
That don't seem exactly square --
I know all men are brothers."

"Or does he randomly reply,
without good rhyme or reason?
Maybe, it's the time of day,
the weather or the season."

"Now I ain't trying to act smart,
it's just the way I feel.
And I was wondering', could you tell me --
what the heck's the deal?!"

Peter listened very patiently
and when Jake was done,
There were smiles of recognition,
and he said, "So, you're the one!!"

"That day your truck, it wouldn't start,
and you sent your prayer a flying,
You gave us all a real bad time,
with hundreds of us trying."

"A thousand angels rushed,
to check the status of your file,
But you know, Jake, we hadn't heard
from you in quite a long while."

"And though all prayers are answered,
and God ain't got no quota,
He didn't recognize your voice,
and started a truck in Minnesota."

The old time movie cowboys were BIG men. Randolph Scott, James Gardner, Burt Lancaster, John Wayne, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and many more were 6 foot tall or more. I read an article somewhere a couple of years ago that compared them with the male “stars” of today. Most were significantly under 6 foot. Tall in the saddle has become a matter of camera angles and photo shopping. Digital photography has made it easier to shoot smaller segments of scenes. Now the “talent” doesn’t have to remember the script. It is like using a teaspoon instead of a shovel. I’ll let you address the decline of the “ladies”.

Judging by the comments on this video, they have been moderated. All I heard was screeching but everyone is exclaiming how wonderful it is.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked Paula Cole when she first came on the scene 20 years ago. But man, this blows.

"Cops often have the same problem...they spend all day dealing with the dregs, and forget that it's the dregs they're dealing with."

This issue is not just the "dregs" - it's what a lot of us might call "stand up guys" - middle-class guys with decent jobs who forget that their wife and kids come before their own wants and needs.
I work with guys like that, go to church with guys like that. Some of them are cops and lawyers, not just homeless drug addicts.
