Mar-a-Lago: The winter White House
By Leigh Hartman - Apr 4, 2017
Mar-a-Lago, President Trumps Florida estate, has become well known as the president frequently travels there to work or host foreign leaders.
The first meeting between Trump and President Xi Jinping of China will take place April 67 at Mar-a-Lago, which is located at the heart of Floridas Palm Beach community.
Trump is not the first president to have access to Mar-a-Lago as a Florida retreat, but he is the first one to use it. By visiting this winter White House, Trump is belatedly fulfilling the dream of Mar-a-Lagos original owner and designer.
When socialite and cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post built Mar-a-Lago Spanish for Sea to Lake in 1927, she spared no expense. The 114-room mansion sits on 8 hectares of land, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and an inland waterway on the other.
The ornate Jazz Age house was designed with Old-World Spanish, Venetian and Portuguese influences and decorated with Posts personal collection of antiques.

A dream deferred
Mar-a-Lago was designated a National Historic Site in 1969 in recognition of its design and architecture. Three years later it was entered into the National Register of Historic Places, a list of sites the U.S. deems worthy of preservation.
But Post had even bigger plans for her Palm Beach home. Upon her death in 1973, she willed the estate to the U.S. government, intending it to be used as a winter White House for the U.S. president to entertain visiting foreign dignitaries.
Her plan didnt work, however. Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter never used the property. And in 1981 the government returned the estate to the Post Foundation because it was costing too much money to maintain.
That opened the way for Trump, a real-estate magnate, to purchase the property in 1985. When he acquired the house, Trump also bought the decorations and furnishings that Post had collected over the years, preserving Mar-a-Lagos style and taste.
After refurbishing the house and adding an events space, Trump opened the estate to dues-paying members of the public in 1995 as the Mar-a-Lago Club.
Posts dream of a winter White House came true with Trumps election in 2016. Trump regularly works out of the house he maintains at Mar-a-Lago and uses the club to host foreign dignitaries. (In February, Japans Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie, visited.)
As Rick Rose, a local Palm Beach historian, told USA Today, [Post] finally got what she wanted.

This is the article that is three weeks old now and has now been taken down from the State Department web site.
The crazy hysterical control-left decided this was a commercial for Mar-a-lago and was therefore some sort of illegal government sponsored advertising for Trump.
So the usual suspects are going crazy and just starting up for this round of trumped-up outrage.
It is clearly an article on the history of the house - a history I did not know - meant to inform people and journalists, mainly foreign, who cover visits between the US President and his counterparts such as Abe of Japan or others. This article was specifically posted prior to the Xi Jinping visit.
The left clearly can understand this but are looking, of course, for anything to glom on to.
If one were to take the left screaming-fit argument to its logical conclusion, based in this, Mar-a-lago could. Or even be mentioned a ever - by anyone in government or by any publication, electronic or otherwise, or broadcast of any sort etc...that is funded by the government.
I am posting this because this is the latest hysteria, if you haven't heard it yet, you will and mainly to post the entire original blog post that has been taken down (this is from Wayback) for posterity and for objective perusal in light of the distorted reports about it that are to come.

I just had to drop by this thread and say I LOVE the “control left” tag!!! That is what they live and breath - control. It’s the first time I saw it and it’s all shiny and new to me right now. Thanks.

It looks like the CREW outfit run by David Brock (Hillary's point man for efforts to impeach Trump that began on Inauguration Day) was involved in making an issue out of it:
---
State Department website promotes Trump's Mar-a-Lago as the 'winter White House'
The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), an ethics watchdog, questioned how the promotion could benefit Trump's real-estate portfolio.
"This is very troubling and further shows the extent to which the Trump businesses are intertwined with the Trump administration," CREW communications director Jordan Libowitz said in a statement. "Things like this add to the constant ethical questions raised by the Trump administration's behavior when it comes to the president's portfolio."
Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat and ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, also criticized the State Department's promotion of the resort.
"Yes, I am curious @StateDept," he tweeted Monday. "Why are taxpayer $$ promoting the President's private country club?"
He subsequently shared a link to the ShareAmerica site, pointing to the full post "in its kleptocratic glory."

Don’t think these leftist shits criticized Reagan for operating from his “western White House”.
Seems that Trump’s got their goat by the balls and they are screaming in pain.

It’s a nice article. It reflects well on the administration. Progressives don’t like that. They have to put there stink on everything.

So what if he goes there often?
1. He is only accepting the minimum quid pro quo...one dollar...as his salary.
2. I am sure the foreign leaders he hosts there enjoy it.
3. And, I bet the Secret Service does too.
And, oh yes, he has already brought jobs back or saved them; reduced illegals coming in by 70 percent or so, made his determination obvious on the world stage, cut a lot from the spending, etc.
I think it’s fine if he works from Mar-a-Lago. I’m pretty sure he is able to communicate safely from that place.
So tired of the media. I was watching the press briefing today and felt so bad for Sean Spicer. What a thankless job. The mediots were relentless as usual, asking pointless questions over and over....I guess in the hopes of tripping him up.
I want to send him a note...he is doing a fantastic job. The media were never harsh like that with Obama’s spokespersons.

I got the pics at the State Department link. Awesome, and the place should blow away any guests that visit, foreign or domestic.

Palm Beach is 90 minutes in the air from DC. And the lodging cost is zero.
Compare that to the exotic Martha’s Vineyard and Hawaii jaunts that the Obama’s did a number of times.
