Some Perspective on the Syria Strike
American Thinker.com ^ | April 16, 2017 | Jonathan F.Keiler

A good rule of thumb for conservatives is that If Nancy Pelosi favors something, oppose it. Pelosi liked the administration's April 7 cruise missile strike on Syria.

Time to roll out another truism: there is an exception to every rule.

A fair number of conservatives don't see it that way. A strange conglomeration of hardcore Trump supporters and die-hard Trump-haters objected to the attack variously on populist, constitutional, and Realpolitik grounds. To make the situation even odder, they effectively joined the leftist lunatic fringe (where Pelosi can often be found), which opposes almost any American military action based on strained interpretations of both existing and imaginary international law.

All of these various groups are likely wrong about the attack, an assertion that seems increasingly true as time passes. But let's quickly review their briefs.

On the hardcore Trump side, some commentators see the attacks as inconsistent with Trump's electioneering (which is true) and his general America First bent. Trump felt compelled to explain away the charge by asking Americans to recognize and accept the difference between campaigning for president and governing. If he did not do this at some point in his administration, he'd be truly unique. Trump's turned rather quickly on this issue and others, but he took a lot of positions during the campaign that were bound to be brutalized by reality. Duly assaulted, Trump is punching back in an increasingly sensible manner that might irk some true believers but was probably inevitable.

So, reality has moved Trump closer to Jeb’s and John Kasich’s position. So, those guys are smarter or more honest? One-term Presidency.

Here’s another rule of thumb:

If you site the Bush toady John Yoo as an authority, you are probably wrong.

“Jeb’s and John Kasich’s position”?

Strange.

I don’t recall either of those folks mentioning a position other than “Vote for Me” (with a “Trump sucks” or two for relief) from last summer until just now.

Or am I just not paying the required rapt attention to losers anymore?

Y’know, if you’re out to push this Trump As A Traitor To His Base line, you’re going to have to get at least a modicum of logic behind the posts.

This one’s stretched clear out of our galaxy.

"Trump's turned rather quickly on this issue and others, but he took a lot of positions during the campaign that were bound to be brutalized by reality."

LOL. Just another way of saying that nothing ever changes, anyone who thinks it will is unrealistic, and so just take a bite of the big sh*t sandwich the DC Bubble hands you and shut up.

People want change, not more of the same old BS about "reality" as defined by the DC crowd and their money masters. If Trump isn't the guy who can change that false "reality" he's not the guy he campaigned as.

I can see all kinds reasons Trump might have for a largely ineffective strike on the Syrian military after a couple of guys sitting of a sofa in London say the Syrian government is responsible for the chemical attack rather than the people who controlled the target city and who have used chemical weapons dozens of times.

I can't see any reason not expect Trump to ignore what the DC Bubble insiders like Dina Powell say is reality and just get on with draining the swamp. He ignored what all the same people said was reality by even entering the primaries so why accept the what the insiders say is "reality" now ?

So far, Trump has repealed a lot of Executive Orders and seems to be bringing jobs back to the US along with convincing corporations to reinvest in the US. In addition, the wall seems to be coming along as planned, it remains to be seen whether or not Congress will mount a major effort to stop him from building it.

That's great and far more than anyone else has done in decades. The problem is, all the EOs can be reinstated by the next President or the one after that. Anyone who saw how fast industry can leave the US also realizes that it can leave again just as fast.

Ryan RINOs stabbing him in the back and the wrong people getting control of the NSC are the two real problems, not any "reality" that is fixed and forever unchangeable. Accepting what DC and the elite crowd in NY and LA say is reality is what has flushed away several generations worth of our nations wealth and infrastructure along with almost all the morality Western Civilization has been based on for dozens of centuries.

Going along with fatalistic claims that we have to accept their reality is a form of slow motion surrender.

Man, ya gotta put this in perspective. Persecuted Christians, Islamist headchoppers - those are side issues. The main issue is oil and contracts written in petro-dollars. Russia, Iran, China etc. are working on setting up alternative international trade organizations and contracts written in alternative currencies.

Saddam was threatening to write his oil contracts based on another currency, like Euros. The US was not amused.

Now Assad is being recalcitrant about that oil pipeline through Syria and is teamed up with Russia and Iran. Will the US tolerate such an arrangement?

Nah, we don’t drop $3 trillion and thousands of dead and tens of thousands horribly maimed Americans for an elaborate hit on a recalcitrant dictator. Right??

I’ve been here a while, and he’s right. There is nothing we can do overseas that will solve the problem, because Islam is the problem and we are bringing Muslims into the US in increasing numbers. Trump has not stopped that, and he broke his promise on that score. As long as Islam is allowed to be here, the threat of terrorism exists and will get worse as they continue to reproduce and take advantage of our tolerance.

Bring US troops home and put them on our borders, ban Islam in civilized nations, deport Muslims, institute a “pet the pig” requirement to enter a non-Muslim country or board a plane. All the bombing and troops and money spent on fighting ISIS (which is really just Islam) overseas won’t do any good. Let the Muslims kill each other in their dirt bag countries. Keep them out of the west.

Here’s some food for thought.
The Clinton December 1998 bombing of Iraq ... The stated goal of the cruise missile and bombing attacks was to strike ... cruise missiles and used 325 Tomahawk land attack ...
Trump actually used 61 T-Lams which 59 which hit their target. Yet, everyone is up in arms about the Trump used of T-Lams. Go figure.

He’s accusing you of being a Democrat troll. I agree with you. Trump promised to get the US out of futile wars and nation-building, but it seems he is listening to the wrong people.

Anything that Paul Wolfowitz likes, must be bad. One would think with his terrible track record of predictions on the war in Iraq, he might shut up and slink away in shame, but he never gives up on sending other people off to war to fight and die for his grandiose vision of molding Muslim countries into open, tolerant, democratic societies.

Oh, ok. I myself am wondering if these cheerleaders for Bushism are neocon hasbara. Not only did Trump become George W. Trump abroad, but here at home. His 180 on DACA is shocking a huge part of his base as well. DHS Not Deporting DREAMers, Sec. Kelly Assures. As Steve Sailer points out, "Where in your copy of The Art of the Deal does it say you should just concede for free whatever your counterpart wants most?"
