NEW YORK (WABC) -- A decorated Marine veteran facing a mandatory three years behind bars on a gun charge will not be going to prison, after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stepped in and commuted his sentence Friday.

Marine Sergeant Hisashi Pompey's conviction stands, but the penalty is gone. Additionally, a full pardon remains under review.

"Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, this isn't April Fools, right?" he said, when we told him the good news. "I don't know how to react. I'm grateful, grateful."

As we told you exclusively earlier this week, Pompey was fighting for his freedom after his arrest. Now, he won't have to serve a single day in prison.

This Marine MP still may face Marine discipline for allowing his friend to take his sidearm, and for grabbing the pistol out of the car over a nightclub fight in the first place.

You are correct. It is excellent news.

Although he is not a Marine. He is a Marine veteran. Huge difference.

There would be many ex-Marines here who would disagree with you.

If Cristie wasn’t there.....! You really can’t carry, transport or whatever in the People’s Republic of New Jersey. The relief is coming from the power of a decent Governor, nothing else.

I was always under the impression that a large percent of New Jersey folks are salt of the earth, patriotic and as good as the come. Am I wrong?

While I know the whole “Once a Marine, always a Marine” tradition, since he’s a Marine veteran rather than active duty, the Marine Corps won’t be able to discipline him.

WATCH THE SECOND VIDEO....

"This Marine still may face Marine discipline....."

I doubt it. The video will go viral. People will be moved....I, myself, felt some wetness trickle down my face when the wife holding the child covered her face after being overwhelmed by the joyous news.

I don't think it would be a smart move by the Corps brass to now go against the intent of the pardon and to go after the decorated Marine, his wife and child, public opinion...and the wrath of God, in this case, Gov. Christie.

I'll bet all charges will be dropped.

What a happy Easter for this military family. Thank you, Governor, for making my day !

And they would be legally wrong. They are veterans of one of the greatest military branches in history and rightfully should be proud of that for the rest of their lives. But a veteran of any one of the military branches who is separated by discharge is no longer a member of that branch. No military ID card. No right to walk onto a base. No right to give to receive orders.

It is exactly the same for veterans of the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard.
