AEGIS ships are designed to tackle such threats. One frigate launching, well, I cant say there is zero percent chance a missile gets through and sinks our ship but it's certainly no slam dunk. And if you launch on us it's world war III so I doubt the Russians want to start WWIII by having one of their frigates sunk after making some futile gesture.

In my opinion they sent ONE ship so it's not perceived as a real threat but sends a message that Syria is under Russian protection and next time it could get ugly.
