Gregg Jarrett: Sanctuary cities won't find refuge in law
Fox News ^ | March 28, 2017 | Gregg Jarrett

The Trump administration sent Attorney General Jeff Sessions to deliver a blunt message Monday to so-called "sanctuary" cities: Continue to defy federal immigration policy and you'll take a big hit in the wallet.

Sessions' announcement that the White House is serious about cutting off funds from cities that protect illegal immigrants from federal deportation was met with bluster and defiance from big-city mayors. But when push comes to shove, they may find the courts ultimately side with President Trump.

For now, it is worth cutting through the posturing and considering how we got here - and what the law actually says.

What Is A “Sanctuary City”?

More than 300 cities and counties have sanctuary policies. For some, it is simply a political statement. They have taken no real action to give sanctuary to people who are there illegally.

Good piece by Jarrett. He spells out how people can be prosecuted under federal law for harboring illegals.

"Any person who, knowing that an alien has come to the U.S. in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection such alien in any place, including any building… shall be imprisoned not more than 5 years.” (8 U.S. Code, section 1324)

Don’t bet on it Greg! The immigration law Trump based his eo’s on are just as clear and we saw how that went.

I’m sure the liberals will find friendly, liberal judges who will block the order.

Gregg Jarrett appears to be the replacement for Judge Napolitano.

These mayors should be arrested. In fact, start out by arresting the cops who follow the mayors’ orders and the state police who follow the governors’ orders.

Good to know, jazusamo. This law states that we can also go after landlords who rent to alien invaders. I’d give landlords 30 days to kick invaders out from rentals, and then start seizing rental property.

I vaguely remember one rule they might be able to use. Something about how if a certain district doesn’t take federal funds, then the sheriff in that district has the right to kick out federal agents. It’s been a long time since I read about it, though.

That would be funny to watch, given that sanctuary cities tend to be stuck on the government teat.

Good point, and he may well be.

I’ll miss Judge Nap, hopefully FNC will come around and think again.

Democrats are putting illegal, criminal alien invaders ahead of honest tax-paying citizens.

Why aren't Republicans seizing on this? This is a tailor-made issue for them.

I strongly agree.

Why Republicans are not all over this baffles me, it’s an issue they can’t lose on.

When President Trump won the election I thought the squishy Repubs would change their ways but I’m still waiting.

The law is whatever the judge says it is. If 8 U.S. Code, section 1324 stands in the way, it will be ignored or interpreted in light of some other judicial precedent to arrive at the desired outcome.

And to top it off, the judge will say this outcome is compelled either by law, or by the clear language in the constitution.

I wonder if Judge Napolitano is now part of the investigation?

I agree. Laws are meaningless in this era. The law is how a judge decides to twist it to suit his preferred outcomes and political ideology.

I am so happy to see Gregg Jarrett doing so well, having beaten the beast and healthy. He is very smart and has been shining on FOX and writing very fine columns.

Sorry, however, the Murdock bouncing baby boys gave the good judge the heave ho!
