Los Angeles mayor vows to fight Trump administration attempt to strip ‘sanctuary city’ funding

Responding to the latest warnings by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions that Department of Justice funds will be withheld from sanctuary cities, Mayor Eric Garcetti said Monday he will fight efforts by the Trump administration to take away federal funding needed for law enforcement in Los Angeles.

Garcetti said that such actions would be unconstitutional, adding that the city’s policies are “designed to keep our residents safe.”

“Slashing funds for first-responders, for our port and airport, for counterterrorism, crime-fighting and community-building serves no one — not this city, not the federal government, not the American people,” he said. “We will fight to protect the safety and dignity of all Angelenos, and we will work closely with our representatives in Congress to make sure that Los Angeles does not go without federal resources that help protect millions of people every day.”

Among the Justice Department grants received by the city of Los Angeles in recent years include $1.8 million from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which goes to the city’s initiative for reducing criminal gang activity.

The city also was awarded $1 million last year from the Justice Department to be put toward a $69 million program to equip all police officers in the field with body cameras.

It was not immediately clear how much funding could be at risk if Los Angeles were deemed a sanctuary city.

Sessions said local jurisdictions seeking U.S. Department of Justice grants must first demonstrate they are not sanctuary cities, by proving they are in compliance with Section 1373 of U.S. Code Title 8, which requires notification of federal officials about the immigration status of people in local custody. The policy was issued under the Barack Obama administration in 2016.

The mayor shouldn’t worry. The Leftists will find a Federal Judge who will stop it. Unelected judges ruling against legitimate law are boss in this country.

How many lies can Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti squeeze into one statement?

First, there is no basis for saying that the action would "slash" funds, rather, the indications in the article are that it would merely 'reduce' funds.

Second, preventing US immigration authorities from lawfully apprehending illegal aliens does nothing to protect the 'safety and dignity of all Angelenos', rather it does the exact opposite by endangering the safety and dignity of all.

Finally, threatening to reduce federal funding when scofflaw government officials such as Garcetti intentionally violate the duties of their office is a "good thing" which serves everybody except for criminals and their enablers in government.

Sorry Sen-yor Garcetti, federal money ALWAYS comes with strings attached. Don’t like the strings? Then don’t take the money.

I don’t think there is anything in the Constitution about Federal Funding for anything at state or local levels.

There is, however, something about “...in adhering to their (the United States) Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.”

It is an ironic statement for a sanctuary city to make.

Clearly Garrett has other sources of funds because he has other plans to keep his residents safe.

He certainly does not need funds to ignore or flout the law. Does he plan to selectively enforce federal laws? Is he in jeopardy for violating laws? How does that keep his residents safe?

“unconstitutional” I don’t think he knows what this word means (while I am sure they will be able to find a friendly judge to rule that way.

President Trump better get a handle on this, and soon.

And he better be prepared if a Federal Judge rules against the Federal Government.

This city is absolutely crawling with bums (primarily American citizens, although I hate to admit it), and this Garcetti creep does NOTHING about it. Instead we get more of this “sanctuary” crap.

Unconstitutional?

Like way back when the federal government threatened states to withold federal funding for civil infrustructure if they refused to set highway speed limits to 55MPH?

I feel like the precedent has long been set on this. Not that I agree with it, but yeah, you can’t have it both ways.

Also, tying highway funding to states having to raise their drinking age to 21.

Will POTUS DJT have his defunding of so called sanctuary cities thwarted by an activist liberal judge?

You can bet the farm on it.

If he wants to find something unconstitutional, find it in the Constitution were it says that Congress can take money from one person and give it to another.
