Wounded Ryan faces new battle
The Hill ^ | 03/28/2017 | Scott Wong

A wounded Paul Ryan is facing another potential crisis over the next month.

The Speaker, who saw his years-long effort to repeal ObamaCare collapse last week after a rebellion on the right, must come up with a plan to fund the federal government and avert a shutdown.

The Wisconsin Republican will face many of the same tricky intraparty dynamics as he tries to keep the government running.

Funding expires in about a month, on April 28, but the House is taking a two-week recess in mid-April, leaving negotiators just a few legislative work weeks to reach a deal.

The stakes are extremely high for the GOP. A government shutdown, similar to the one orchestrated by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and his House allies in 2013, would confirm what many Democrats and political pundits are already saying: Republicans, despite controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress, simply can't govern.

Two of the biggest hurdles to keeping the government's lights on are conservatives' insistence that the spending package include billions for President Trump's border wall and that it block all federal dollars for Planned Parenthood.

Trump has requested $1.5 billion in supplemental funding for what he's called his "big, beautiful wall," plus another $2.6 billion in his 2018 budget request.

But Senate Democrats have threatened to filibuster the must-pass spending bill if it includes money for a wall, sparking a shutdown standoff over one of the president's chief campaign promises. On top of that, some Republicans from border states -- including Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (Texas), Armed Services Chairman John McCain (Ariz.) and Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) -- are highly skeptical of Trump's wall, citing concerns about the price tag and private-property rights.

... Trump has become part of the swamp rather than its drainer.

That is President Trump except to liberals, progressives, and NeverTrumpers who malign our president as you just did. NeverTrumpers will destroy anyone and anything they touch, including FR.

The way some freepers are carrying on about the Freedom Caucus, I guess they would rather that we had left Eric Cantor in office so that they could have passed Rubio’s amnesty in the summer of 2014 to get the issue off the table as planned to clear the way for Yeb! and there would have been no President Trump.

George does have more of a clue than Ryan.

Ryan should realize by now that the demos never give an inch. All these RINOs are trying to please demos but it’s to no avail. I would ram every bit of policy up their @@ses if they like it or not. Make them come to the table willing to compromise. RINOs like Ryan are spineless.

I agree with all you say there.

But also communists are as communists do. Paul Ryan took 7 years to write RyanCare which is a socialist /communist bill so that proves Ryan is a communist and a liar.

I am not a never Trump person,. I voted for him.

Trump betrayed America. And if he continues to do that, he will be nothing mmore than an e-GOP lame duck President. If he changes in the next few weeks back to being an American, I will gladly call him president. But he is not acting presidential now.

Betrayal is betrayal is betrayal.

Both Ryan and Trump should be ashamed of themselves trying to usurp the People’s personal health care freedom with a lobbyists bill that would screw America.

If you want to call betrayal presidential, be my guest. I will NOT.

Trump is now being deserted due to his own betrayal of America. Just as Ryan and the GOP-e planned. If Trump wants back he needs to be clear about who the assholes are in his life. That includes Ryan and McConnell. Its not the HFC.

Good or bad, Ryan is the team’s quarterback.

It would be better to have no QB at all than to have lyin'ryan fumbling in his own end zone, purposely throwing interceptions, and allowing himself safeties at every opportunity.

“Would someone please explain to me why in the world the Republican House, which passed multiple repeal bills under Obama’s presidency, can’t pass one of those again?”

It was all for show. They knew the votes meant nothing except the ability to come home to the constituents and say “I voted for repeal. Re-elect me.”

The whole thing was figured out in the coke filled parties where the dims and reps all show up at 5 pm and laugh at the con they are pulling and what a bunch of idiots we are for believing anything they say.

Some people just aren’t ready to accept the fact that Trump, like any chief executive, is responsible for Trump’s actions.

He promised to “Repeal and Replace” Obamacare. The AHCA bill did neither, Trump trusted Ryan - one of his staunchest and most outspoken opponents, but it’s failure is the fault of the Freedom Caucus...

I desperately want Trump and his agenda to succeed, but if he lays down with dogs like Ryan, he’s gonna get fleas and much worse.

Go President Trump!

Hillary promised executive amnesty to 40 million illegals in her first 100 days as President. This proves Hillary is even many times worse than Obama.

And Hillary plans to dissolve the U.S. border first 100 days:

http://www.breitbart.com/2016-presidential-race/2016/05/25/clinton-releases-plan-dissolve-us-border-within-100-days/

I see a lot of whiners on these forums here.

They and we should all be thanking our lucky stars the corrupt communist Hillary didn’t win. Hillary would now be carrying out her plans to erase the U.S. border with her executive amnesties, importing millions of Muslim refugees, and single payer socialist Hillary care.

Hillary’s Muslim refugees would not be bombing in the USA like they are in Europe now without abandon

I agree. So much talk and no action. Trump is doing his part as much as he can with EOers doing away with regulations, toughening up on immigration with ICE doing its job and AG pressuring sanctuary cities. But congress, they are stuck on stupid. Sigh.

You’re right! My question was (mostly) rhetorical. I do believe that the November election was miraculous. My prayer that day was that God would hear the cries of the unborn and give our nation another opportunity to undo Roe v. Wade.

“Trump has become part of the swamp rather than its drainer”.

That is a silly statement right there. Outside of the healthcare back and forth, Trump's white house is doing some of the most conservative things in a long time. Not to mention he is about to blow up the IC treasonous actions after the election.

Here’s your lesson. If they did that it might actually pass. Think about it.

Understood. It does appear however, that our Congressional representatives will be inclined to squander this historic opportunity. We shall see.
