Syria discussing previously rejected constitution with Russia, says president Assad

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Anything is up for discussion, including a new constitution for Syria, President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with Russian journalists on Monday.

“We are ready to discuss anything including the constitution, but we need to see who’s going to be in Geneva, are they going to discuss the same paper or not?” the president said. “But for us, as a government, our position is very clear: that we are ready to discuss it in details, but we support the headline, of course.”

Both Syria and the opposition groups had previously rejected a Russian proposal for a new constitution which would have changed the Syrian Arab Republic into a Syrian Democratic Republic removing emphasis on a particular ethnicity and in which autonomy would be granted for the Kurds in the north.

“Yesterday, I think, our representative in the United Nations, Mr. Jaafari, announced that we support the Russian initiatives – different initiatives, not only this one – as headlines, and now we are discussing with the Russians the details”, he said.

The Syrian President expressed a desire to know who will attend not only Geneva but also the Astana talks in order to reach concrete achievements.

“The problem is that we went to Astana recently, as you know, the other delegation, the delegation of the militants, didn’t join that meeting, they didn’t go to Astana, and we all believe that this is the negative influence of the Turks. So, how can we start something concrete if you don’t have a partner?”

You are right as to what the Assad’s have done.

However, while they have been oppressive to challenges to their rule, they did run a secular government, and outside of political activity, there was real freedom of religion for any religion and freedom of expression in most sphere’s.

And, as much as the Assad’s conducted government as a hereditary monarchy, the primary external forces against them, and operating against them, and funding their domestic opponents, were the fundamentalist Sunni Muslim regimes in the region; primarily the Saudis and the Gulf States, and later Erdogan in Turkey. Were that not the case, they would have been on much better terms with them and not found cause to seek friendship with the Mullah’s in Tehran as a counterweight.

That is not to paint the Assad’s as “white hats”. Other than the Israelis, I don’t think there are any in the region in a western sense.

Who says both US and Russian presence in Syria are not constructive.

Both can be, but according to law, Russia can have a presence in Syria while the US can only have influence by diplomacy.

Other points:

Assad is no fool and Leftist Globalists who want to rewrite the Syrian Constitution to their own personal specifications are far worse in their intent than Assad, they just have better Presstitutes shilling for them. Assad and his father have killed a lot of people, but upon close observation, it was Muslim Brotherhood people and their supporters and money men. This is akin to an American leader killing a lot of Nazi Party members in the middle of WWII.

"Democratic" in the title of a Constitution of a ME state means Mob Rule.

Muslim Brotherhood and Saudi influence in US policy has resulted in the rise of ISIS and the destabilization of most of the entire Middle East and Turkey using genocide, far worse than Assad's more mild fatal actions in Syria.

The only nation to somewhat survive the Globalist, American Leftist, Muslim Brotherhood, Saudi plan for "Arab Spring" "Democracy" is Egypt, via their Military intervention and their long term policy of rounding up, imprisoning and killing in mass Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters.

Thanks for your response.

I have reasons for why I view Iraq the way I do, and why those views are quite different than my views concerning the leadership of Egypt, Lybia, and Syria.
