~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort William Henry Harrison, Montana

Fort William Henry Harrison is the Montana National Guard training facility. It is also home to the Fort Harrison VA Medical Center and Montana State Veterans Cemetery, located adjacent to the military installation. Fort Harrison is located in Helena, Montana.

Fort William Henry Harrison (1895–1913) was authorized by a Congressional act of 12 May 1892 which was intended to establish, as a part of a greater consolidation program, concentrations of troops in a few larger installations so that smaller installations could be abandoned. The post was first named Fort Harrison after the sitting President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison, on 13 Dec 1892.

Some years later on 16 Feb 1906, the name was changed to Fort William Henry Harrison because it was discovered that there had already been an Army fort named for Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana. Fort William Henry Harrison was first garrisoned with troops from Fort Assinniboine near Havre, Montana 23 Sep 1895.

The National Guard is a unique and essential element of the U.S. military. Founded in 1636 as a citizen force organized to protect families and towns from hostile attacks, today’s National Guard Soldiers hold civilian jobs or attend college while maintaining their military training part time, always ready to defend the American way of life in the event of an emergency.

Yep! LOL! And right now I’m watching the Kocser storks. I hadn’t checked on that nest in a little while and when I checked tonight, there they were. I’m tickled to see them again. Just hope she doesn’t lay so many eggs this year. Last year was a rough one at that nest.

Hello Kathy....been awhile since I've been active on FR. Slow coming back too it seems. Lots of home projects finally completed which took me away after Pres. Trumps inauguration......(he inspired me!) ...and Spring painting coming up ahead too!

Did you still have Buckwheat out with you for the light show? Did he enjoy his outing?

The one time I tried a harness on a cat, long ago, he plopped spread eagle on the ground and never moved.

No, I didn’t take Buckwheat out for the light show. It was dark already and I wasn’t taking any chances with his life. Too much chance of coyotes being around. I kept waiting for the pack to chase another rabbit through that area like they did the other night when Hubby was working outside the garage. He still has a scab on his head from whacking that mirror when he jumped up. I still wish there was video of that episode. LOL!

I did hear something kind of “blow” at me while I was out there but didn’t see anything when I turned on the flashlight. Didn’t sound like a deer so I don’t know what it was.

I’ve been surprised at how well the few cats I’ve used the harness on have behaved. Only had one flatten out like a pancake when it was put on. Except for Buckwheat, I’ve only used it with cats who were terminally ill and getting outside was something to boost their spirits. Just had to keep them in check so they couldn’t run off. Same for Buckwheat but he’s just a little crippled. He won’t be around a lot longer simply because he’s old. Want to keep him happy as possible for that reason.
