The computer, taken Thursday in Brooklyn, is encrypted, one source said. Officials did not provide details of what information was on the laptop or the level of sensitivity.

>> Anyone remember when we used to believe that the Secret Service was capable and competent? <<

The Secret Service was created in the days following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Its mission was to protect the president and to go after counterfeiting operations that were rampant after the Civil War.
In 1908 the FBI was created. The reason for creating the FBI was to keep tabs on the Secret Service which had become obsessed with spying on members of Congress.

I’m pretty certain it’s an op and no robbery due to negligence at this point, but I’m beginning to wonder whose it is.

New York-based Secret Service agent’s laptop was stolen, but the device is encrypted and sensitive data is not at risk, law enforcement sources told NBC News and NBC New York on Friday.
The sources said the laptop requires a keycode to access, and two unsuccessful attempts to log in will destroy the device’s memory.

After the whole debacle with the IRS and State Dept where they scrubbed the hard drives and backups, I’m not sure who to trust. There is chicanery afoot.

- Agent leaves a sensitive laptop in her car.
- Agent leaves car unlocked.
- Someone uses an *Uber* to come over and steal it.

HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.

Every IT person just said “bullshiite”. That is OS dependent so putting it in a linux box as an external drive will fix that.

I do not know why but the has me laughing.

First thought that came to mind was the cartoon with white spy and black spy

It’s possible there is custom hardware/firmware.

Anyone ever see the movie Hopscotch. A character explains that FBI stands for F***ing B@llbusting Imbeciles. If this wasn't a set-up, works for me.

I’m sure there’s a false tooth in every SS device to literally melt the drives, once they’re opened/activated by the thief after being taken. In the meantime, they track where it’s going.

Now, who leaked what was on it, or is this conjecture?

Surely the laptop is encyrpted and requires a signon to access the harddrive. Harddrive encryption software will scramble/scrub the harddrive if someone tries unsuccesfully more than a few times to signon. Hopefully her password was not stored with that laptop. Also, why would any sensitive data be on the harddrive? It should only be stored on their servers.

A ‘false tooth’ - that’s a good description.

You can remove the firmware and just read the bare drive

Who leaves a laptop in a car in New York?

Not the best and brightest. This agent should immediately be fired.

Why does a SS agent have HRC’s email?

Why does the SS have HRC’s email?

We have even replaced the board on a hard drive to read it.
