Public broadcasting fires back at White House over proposed budget cuts

PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have pushed back against a White House budget proposal that would drastically cut, or eliminate entirely, funding to the organizations as part of a major realignment of fiscal priorities that includes a big increase in defense spending.

“PBS and our nearly 350 member stations,” said a statement released Thursday, “along with our viewers, continue to remind Congress of our strong support among Republican and Democratic voters, in rural and urban areas across every region of the country. We have always had support from both parties in Congress, and will again make clear what the public receives for federal funding for public broadcasting. The cost of public broadcasting is small, only $1.35 per citizen per year, and the benefits are tangible: increasing school readiness for kids 2-8, support for teachers and homeschoolers, lifelong learning, public safety communications and civil discourse.”

The statement also cites one poll showing that only 21 percent of Americans (32 percent of Republicans) favor ending public broadcasting support, and another that found 70 percent of Trump voters (and 83 percent of Americans overall) saying they want Congress to find savings elsewhere.

While I find it abhorrent, I don't believe Americans support the elimination of public funding for Sesame Street or the Metropolitan Opera on Saturday mornings.

Likely their popular programs would find another way to stay on the air, but I don't believe Americans are willing to find out.

Congress will not agree to this. They will not go into an election cycle being known as the Congress that killed Big Bird and Capitol Public Radio.

Let’s make a deal. We keep big bird and PBS and the courts rule favorable on the Mr. Trump’s EO blocking refugees from terrorist nations.

We are $20 TRILLION in debt. Funding these frivolous things is how we got that debt. Meanwhile, only THREE units are battle ready in our military….and the national defense is the only duty to citizens that is stipulated in the Constitution. Cut the desserts when we are running out of beans and bread.

Big Bird is not on PBS.

It is on privately funded stations and has been for a while.

Seasame Street is paid for by HBO now. HBO gets the new episodes and PBS gets them 9 months later.

Yes I love it when my tax dollars are used to subvert my way of life, liberty and freedom. Big Bird needs to quit sucking on the taxpayers teat.

Let them transform into a truly non-partisan non-libtard outfit and maybe they will have a chance at bi-partisan support.

As long as one veteran is having to do with less than he/she needs, not one time to these biased ‘news’ services.

Sesame Street makes millions for PBS. There is nothing public about their pandering leftist programs.

Time to make PBS NPR accountable. Cut the cord.

Unless they want to give equal time to conservatives, they should lose all funding. Lose it anyway, plenty of competition.

“PBS has been made obsolete by the internet.”

And even moreso by cable. Decades ago they might have had an argument... not anymore. It’s just entitlement and greed.

If people want NPR and PBS propaganda, let them open their own wallets and pay for it and stop sucking on the wallets of everyone else.

On August 13, 2015, as part of a five-year programming and development deal, Sesame Workshop announced that first-run episodes of Sesame Street would move to premium television service HBO beginning with season 46, which premiered on January 16, 2016.
