I’ve learned that if you ask a rhetorical question around here you get serious, sometimes lengthy answers and explanations. I try to remember to note the question as rhetorical.

The scary thing is they will probably wind up winning on this issue, even though the American people don’t agree with them. The Republicans aren’t going to defend Trump on this issue just like they didn’t on the travel ban.

I don’t understand. It’s already law.

See, that was a problem with previous shutdowns: actively sealing the parks is NOT an essential service. Gates should have been left open for emergency purposes, and the parks otherwise abandoned for the duration.

Statists of any stripe fear government shutdowns, because it demonstrates how little the government is needed.

I say bring it on!

“The Republicans are, after all, in majority, and if, for example, the funding bill that supports EBT cards were held up behind the Wall legislation and that expires, we have a little problem, don’t we?”

I don’t see the problem.

I see their “shut it down” temper tantrum causing a lot of solutions.

“It’s already law.”

The GOP now says that having all three branches of govt. in their control isn’t enough.
They need all 535 seats, in case a single remaining Democrat objects to repelling the ongoing invasion, a president they like and nine conservative justices.
Once we give them that it’s `full speed ahead’!

It was just an evil act by Obama on the American people. I bet they hired extra help to criminalize people entering or taking pictures of parks. They also extended their facism to parks the federal government didn’t even fund.

With less sarcasm, the Democrats supported the 2006 Secure Fence act https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2017/01/26/when-wall-was-fence-and-democrats-embraced/QE7ieCBXjXVxO63pLMTe9O/story.html
because it was supposed to be a token effort and a sop to us America First yahoos in flyover country. What they really hoped to secure was another general amnesty.

So yeah, now they’re hoisted, as you point out: the law’s there.
The open borders shills on both sides of the aisle never thought it would be anything more than a Trojan Horse to accomplish their “comprehensive immigration reform”=amnesty.

HEY !! During a government shut down, how about docking the elected and their staff? No pay for those days, and NO HEALTH BENEFITS. How about that? They can live like we do.

I guess that's the only thing they have in their playbook, Looks like they're gonna wear it out.
It seems to be losing its effectiveness.

Here’s the meat of the act:

H. R. 6061

AN ACT

To establish operational control over the international land and maritime borders of the United States.

1.Short title
This Act may be cited as the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

2.Achieving operational control on the border
(a)In general
Not later than 18 months after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take all actions the Secretary determines necessary and appropriate to achieve and maintain operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders of the United States, to include the following—

(1)systematic surveillance of the international land and maritime borders of the United States through more effective use of personnel and technology, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, ground-based sensors, satellites, radar coverage, and cameras; and
(2)physical infrastructure enhancements to prevent unlawful entry by aliens into the United States and facilitate access to the international land and maritime borders by United States Customs and Border Protection, such as additional checkpoints, all weather access roads, and vehicle barriers.
(b)Operational control defined
In this section, the term operational control means the prevention of all unlawful entries into the United States, including entries by terrorists, other unlawful aliens, instruments of terrorism, narcotics, and other contraband.

And it has worked as well as intended; that is, not at all.

So it begins - official resistance to the wall. Trump should ask Americans to personally raise money for the wall. For every say $1000 you get a brick with your name on it.

Shut it down long enough and we’ll have plenty of $ to build the wall.
