I did some riot control training, instructor, when I was in the Army back in the 60’s.

Whacking is good but a jab is better, aim for the center of mass and jab, see Roman legions, bayonet training.

Use your shield to block and as a weapon to strike follow up with a jab to center of mass. Nothing like a shot to the gut with a pole to put some hurt on a person. Use a shorter stick or pole better control.
