A young man's daring escape from capture by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, apparently with the assistance of a local judicial referee, has shocked and divided the Portland legal community.
Multnomah County court referee Monica Herranz is under internal review and the target of complaints from a federal prosecutor after allegedly helping the undocumented immigrant elude ICE last month by exiting the courtroom through an employee door.
The getaway didn't ultimately keep the man from being snared by immigration officials after pleading guilty to a DUII. But it demonstrates how everyday court proceedings have mutated, and how tensions have grown within the criminal justice system, as ICE steps up deportations under President Donald Trump.
"Our job is to run a courthouse," says Multnomah County Circuit Presiding Judge Nan Waller. "It's a difficult position to be in."
Diddier Pacheco Salazar, a Mexican-born construction worker in his mid-20s, was charged Jan. 1 with driving recklessly and under the influence of intoxicants. At his first court appearance Jan. 3 he pleaded not guilty.

Should this judge be disbarred for abetting a criminal?
I know it’s bad and I shouldn’t think it. But I do. I often think how fair and just it would be if the criminals these judges release would turn and attack, rape, kill and otherwise do great harm to the judges and their families.
Instead of innocent people.
Criminal charges should be lodged.
YUP. And taken in by ICE and prosecuted.
No, it demonstrates what happens when conservatives attempt to be longsuffering and polite for the past sixty years. It demonstrates that we've created an attitude of contempt and lawlessness among those who hate us. And, there is no antidote for this.
“Just go back through my chambers, then take a left at the Hillary poster”.
Remove her from the bench.
Lock her up!
Update: The attorney has been unable to contact his client—who, according to ICE, is currently detained in the agency's privately operated Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Wash.
What is a “judicial referee?” Is that a magistrate of some sort?

I can think of a couple.......
No need for “next crime”.
Monica needs to deal with the consequences of her action.
In my opinion, yes, and prosecuted.
Arrested, charged with aiding and abetting in the commission of a felony, disbarred and jailed.
Then throw the book at her.
Monica needs to be charged with Felony aiding and abetting a known Criminal from Federal Prosecution.
Her actions also demand she be removed immediately from adjudicating ANY cases.
That is an absolute crime and a violation of the judicial cannons of ethics. She should be arrested and disbarred— if true. Outrageous!!
