Jarrett's parents were both African-American. He was a pathologist who ran a childrens' hospital in Iran. She was raised in Shiraz till age 5 when the family moved to London, and thence to the U.S.

Actually, young Richie Daley, who I met many times when I held public office in a GOP county adjoining Crook County, was just as autocratic as the old man. He was surrounded by the same old thugs, crooks, ward bosses, ward heelers, corrupt aldermen, patronage czars, sharpy lawyers, etc. as his daddy had when he assumed his father's throne.

The difference was that times had changed by the time Daley pere shuffled off this mortal coil...and Daley fils was more adept at using the stiletto rather than the sledgehammer when wielding political power in the Windy City.

In person, junior was dumb as a bag of rocks, still talked in personal conversations with the old ethnic neighborhood "dese", "dem" and "dose".

But he had the same gift of Irish blarney and public puckish charm as the old man....which covered his multitudes of inherited political sins.

As a humorous aside, I was trapped with two others in a stalled-between-floors elevator in a downtown Chicago city building for about 10 minutes, just me, Mayor Daley (father) plus one of Da Mare's biggest donors, insurance mogul and multi-millionaire, the late W. Clement Stone. We were rescued in short order, but during that time I discovered from being up close and personal that Stone (who was well-known nationally at the time, his photos are on Wiki) was wearing not only a full toupee, but had a fake mustache also!

True...re Daley pere and Daley fils; especially that fils is as dumb as a box of rocks ( actually dumber and this is an insult to that box of rocks! )...with one caveat, after losing to that POS, BIG TIME RACISTS, ladies' pink underwear wearing, under his suit, Harold Washington, the bloom was somewhat of the Daley rose. The South Side black pols held more power than they had before and I do know this, because I knew some of the BIG GUN DEMS, from the South Side...back in the day.
