(CNN)President Donald Trump wants to pass an immigration reform bill that could grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants living in the US.
"The time is right for an immigration bill as long as there is compromise on both sides," Trump told reporters Tuesday at the White House.
The President is eager to pass a compromise immigration bill in his first term that would stop short of granting a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants, but would allow undocumented immigrants who aren't serious or violent criminals to live, work and pay taxes in the US without fear of deportation, a senior administration official said. And Trump is now considering adding the topic to his speech Tuesday night before his address to a joint session of Congress.
A path to citizenship for those in the country illegally would not be part of Trump's vision for this deal, with the possible exception of "Dreamers" -- those brought into the US illegally as children.
News of the President's support for a comprehensive reform of the US's immigration system fell against a backdrop of increasingly aggressive actions by immigration authorities across the US, who under Trump's administration have found new freedom to deport undocumented immigrants who have not been convicted of a serious crime -- the bar they were told to abide by under President Barack Obama's tenure.

as with the DACA- let’s skim off the really bright, patriotic and highly assimilated ones. Particularly as we have spend a lot of money educating some of them. There are probably hundreds who are exactly the kind of Citizens we want and had nothing to do with being brought here illegally.
Our immigration policy should have ONE and only ONE goal- to ‘brain drain’ the rest of the world of their best and brightest.

I think it is very possible TRUMP is going to “coup” them right back. He is going to “deal”, and he told us that.
They either will agree to take care of his flagship issue - ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION - or he will cram their own issues into the DC sewer system and damage them politically, in a return of strikes.
Issue work permits, 90 days to apply, don't apply, sorry.
No criminal record, you get your permit. Let the dems fight about dui. If they insist we keep criminals with only a dui, could be a compromise.
Work permit, much of the world has those. Means you get to work here. Not to collect welfare. Food stamps. Medicaid. To work, assess the costs yourself.
Employers, this should be awesome for you so I'm confident the GOP will be onboard.
EVerify. Awesome, you'll know they're legal, and can work here legally. You'll employ them conforming to all labor laws, federal, state, and local.
Employers will be happy, because potential legal liability will be clear and limited.
Employees on work permits are here for the benefit of the employer, who can't find American workers, but taxpayers must be protected. Permit holders, and imo green card holders, should be required to maintain both auto and general liability insurance, along with medical insurance. In the case of permit holders, the backup should be the employer. Provide coverage, or be certain workers have it. Insurance companies will be glad to issue employer policies to cover contingencies where employees circumvent these requirements. Employers will pay the premiums.
I'm open to the length of the permits, and requirements that American employees be unavailable. See how that works out as the playing field is leveled.
As to birthright citizenship, separate issue. I should note that All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside means that employees of foreign governments do not transmit US citizenship to children born here, as they're not subject to All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside Even little people, like military of the lowest ranks with a child born here. Those here on legal work permits, same thing, should be in the legislation. Beyond that birthright citizenship should be looked at. Common sense tells me an illegal is in the same situation. I suppose it depends on what the meaning of and is.

I’ll wait and hear what he has to say tonight, but even if he doesn’t want to have a deportation force, why can’t he focus on the criminals, focus on those with stolen social security cards, require e-verify, cut off benefits, and defund sanctuary cities? People will self-deport. Otherwise, if he promises legal status, there is no reason for people to leave, the Dems WILL give them citizenship when in power (hello, millions of Dem voters), and it encourages folks to come in for the next round of amnesty.
Nah, but if speaking spanish continues to be a job requirement for building site supervisors, then yeah you're right.
