Melting snow new danger for those fleeing to Canada from U.S.

Asylum seekers crossing in the dead of night into Canada from the United States may face a new danger in coming weeks, as heavy snowpack melts in the flood-prone U.S. northern plains and province of Manitoba.

The western Canadian province on Monday said the Red River, which runs from North Dakota and Minnesota north into Canada, poses a major flood risk this spring.

Floodwaters that spread over land will make fields hard to navigate in the dark, said Bill Spanjer, emergency coordinator for the Rural Municipality of Emerson-Franklin, Manitoba, where 143 people have crossed illegally since Jan. 1, according to police, after 32 made the trip in December.

"Imagine gumbo and water," Spanjer said. "It would make even rescues difficult."

The exodus is partly out of concern they will be deported under U.S. President Donald Trump, whose crackdown on illegal migrants and travel restrictions against some Muslim-majority countries have alarmed asylum seekers.

Heard today on CBC radio news that the total number of Muslim refugees claiming asylum at the Emerson Manitoba border crossing now is 130, and that the Canadian Federal government has erected a trailer ( woohoo!) to help local authorities ( RCMP) process asylum claimants.

Remember that these undocumented Somalis and Syrians are from Keith Ellison’s constituency, as a Muslim Congressman he has been encouraging undocumented Muslims to illegally stay in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area..

Now that the clean up of illegal alien criminals and welfare recipients is coming in Minnesota, these illegal aliens have decided to escape to Manitoba, instead of sticking around Ellison’s district.

Raises an interesting question: who are they hiding from? Is it the evil Americans (now that evil Trump has risen to power)? But don't the Americans want these people gone? Why would Americans care if they are fleeing? And if it is not the Americans, it must be the Canadians. But the Canadians are the good guys. Aren't they? The Canadians aren't led by Trump. They aren't racist. Why would they be stopping people from crossing into their country?

This just seems like a case of basic cognitive dissonance. If the Canadians are trying to stop them, they are displaying a Trumpian level of racist hatred. Why is that not the story here? And if it the Americans trying to stop them, then that raises the question of why we would be preventing foreign non-white people from leaving. Shouldn't that be the story here? No, Reuters simply assumes that the reader is ignorant, and will simply go along with their blatant emotional manipulation.
