Massive solar flares have the potential to shut down power grids on Earth and wreak havoc on navigation systems

NASA is gearing up to send a robot to the Sun to help prepare for a “huge solar event” that could wreak havoc on Earth

The Solar Plus Probe will come within four million miles of the sun’s surface, facing heat and radiation like no spacecraft has endured before.

Well - within four million miles is still a lot closer than we are. But I do wonder - they are going all that way, they might as well land, grab some samples and bring them back.

(I know WE could use some samples - it’s been rainy and cloudy here for numerous days.)

Looking at a photo, it might not be a bad idea because the Solar Probe has an ISIS Suite. :-)
