H.R. McMaster Breaks With Administration on Views of Islam (Won't Say Radical Islamic Terrorism)
New York Times ^ | February 24, 2017 | By MARK LANDLER and ERIC SCHMITT

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s newly appointed national security adviser has told his staff that Muslims who commit terrorist acts are perverting their religion, rejecting a key ideological view of other senior Trump advisers and signaling a potentially more moderate approach to the Islamic world.

The adviser, Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, told the staff of the National Security Council on Thursday, in his first “all hands” staff meeting, that the label “radical Islamic terrorism” was not helpful because terrorists are “un-Islamic,” according to people who were in the meeting.

That is a repudiation of the language regularly used by both the president and General McMaster’s predecessor, Michael T. Flynn, who resigned last week after admitting that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about a phone call with a Russian diplomat.

It is also a sign that General McMaster, a veteran of the Iraq war known for his sense of history and independent streak, might move the council away from the ideologically charged views of Mr. Flynn, who was also a three-star Army general before retiring.

Wearing his Army uniform, General McMaster spoke to a group that has been rattled and deeply demoralized after weeks of upheaval, following a haphazard transition from the Obama administration and amid the questions about links to Russia, which swiftly engulfed Mr. Flynn.

General McMaster, several officials said, has been vocal about his views on dealing with Islamic militancy, including with Mr. Trump, who on Monday described him as “a man of tremendous talent, tremendous experience.” General McMaster got the job after Mr. Trump’s first choice, Robert S. Harward, a retired Navy vice admiral, turned it down.

I wouldn’t worry about it. McMaster is late to the game and will not be a key player in the Trump White House, IMO.

McMaster’s appointment may end up being a major league mistake if he actually believes that the terrorists who plague the planet now are “un-Islamic”. It’s also a major league mistake if he tries to promote the “terrorism is un-Islamic” lie.

He is beginning to appear to me to be “Bush league”. Stay out da Bushes!

I saw a video clip of McMaster using the term “Daesh” the other day to describe Islamic State and so I’m not surprised here.

He sounds like the kind of guy who represents the ‘military industrial complex’ that wants to use Islamic friendly terms so business can be transacted with Arab money states like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc. Follow the $$$$$ on this.

Too bad we are discussing this in the time frame where news people in powerful places bury stories that are embarrassing, late Friday night-early Saturday morning.

How can the President say one thing while his head of the NSC is telling the staff under him not to say it that it’s wrong? It doesn’t make sense.

He definitely sounds establishment, and I knew as soon as the press loved him. As far as ticking off those countries, Trump hasn’t had any issues with those countries, and he’s been using that term since the beginning of his campaign. Even business wise, they just opened a new tower in Dubai.

As long as he understands "Kill the bad guys"

I'm not worried about McMasters.

How can the NYT be banned from the daily press briefing as Fake News? Had Trump only checked with FR, he’d have seen that they are perfectly legitimate.

He’s gone native. Another of our modern Generals who drink the Kool-Aid that Islam is peace. Very disappointing. He isn’t what we need.

Trump made a huge deal of calling islamic terrorists, islamic terrorists. He excoriated Hillary and Obama during the primaries for not doing so.

And now his chief national security adviser takes the same position as Hillary???

Something is seriously out of whack.

I don’t think the NYT is a credible news source, however, assuming this is true, it’s not surprising, because there are few people in this world as capable of understanding simple things in the way that Trump does.

A very large number of people in this country routinely lie to themselves, believe those lies, then lie to others and expect others to believe those lies.

Trump is hiring too many Obama Generals. One is bound to be a mulligan. This guy is looking more and more like it might be him. I can’t help but recall Comey and Petraeus being vigoriously vouched for on FR like McMaster was a few days ago. We know how they turned out. Let’s hope McMaster isn’t as bad as those two careerists.

Looks like a weak link to me. His take on Islam should have been vetted to the hilt. He sounds like a “go along to get along” type.

Good point. We can’t keep hiring then quickly firing everybody. I don’t like seeing what amounts to insubordinate behavior though. Maybe it’s just a matter of semantics as you hinted.

Would not be a shock to me if life long Democrat Jared Kushner pushed for McMaster. Birds of a feather...
