Trump-Reagan parallels are scary, but not for the reasons critics think
Fox News ^ | February 24, 2017 | Tammy Bruce

The media laugh at any attempt to compare President Trump to former President Ronald Reagan, but there are many similarities, not the least of which are the withering attacks both men endured before and after they sought the presidency.

The extraordinary assaults by media, celebrities and jealous politicians against Trump have been unending. Their attacks include questioning his mental health, repeatedly comparing him to Hitler, declaring him a fascist, insisting he’s a modern-day Manchurian candidate, that he’s a traitor (because Russians!), and on and on.

I'm in the minority here on Free Republic, but I think these unfair attacks on Trump are eventually going to stick. Keep repeating that 1+1=3 often enough, and people will start to believe it. So yes, I'm concerned about these attacks on Trump.

Reagan was very likable. He had a quick sense of humor, and he could deflect a criticism much like an Aikido master could deflect a punch.

Trump is, of course, not Reagan. Trump has a different set of skills. He is, IMHO, much more vulnerable to slander.

Reagan was the target of every bit of this stuff.

Trump fights back. Reagan fended stuff off with the humor. Both ways are effective. The left understands neither.

I respectfully disagree. Trump is tougher than Reagan in many ways, which makes up for his lack of Reaganesque charm(although I think being stubbornly America-first is extremely charming, and a winning strategy). Also, Reagan didn’t have alternative and social media, so he had to rely on his charm, which is why they called him the Teflon president because nothing stuck to him. Nothing sticks to Trump because he catches each grenade and throws it right back into the foxhole of the lying media.

In this case, style is the anti-Trump language.

I can understand where you are coming from, but answer me this if you will.

What can they hit Trump with that they haven’t already?

They’ve effectively inoculated him from criticism by trashing him and demonizing him non-stop for about 20 months now.

Rush said it yesterday (possibly the day before), those who supported Trump are not going to leave his side come hell or high water. They like what he’s trying to do, and they aren’t going to be persuaded to dump him by anyone over anything.

The Left keeps going farther and farther into whaco-o-bird territory, and folks see them as doing that.

It’s over for the Left. They just don’t know it yet.

True enough, but only on a level playing field. America is no longer a level playing field, politically.

Consider this. ABC’s Chief Political Correspondent is George Stephanopoulos. He’s a long-time Democrat political operative. That’s not a level playing field.

Everything. They have already said that Trump is a racist (laughable). They will just build on that. They have already said that Trump is antisemitic (also laughable). They will just build on that too.

I’m not worried about Trump’s core supporters. As Rush said, they’re not going anywhere. I’m worried about the squishy middle.

I apologize for being pessimistic here. But I have never seen attacks like what they are throwing at Trump now. It worries me.

My thinking is just the reverse. The nonsense spewed by the left and the GOPe is going to ultimately wear out.

Oh, sure, there is a segment of the population with the IQs of parrots who just repeat whatever idiocy they hear, but that’s a relatively small subset.

I agree with your 1+1=3 analogy—to a point. There is a core difference in our scenario. Typically, when you’re being told over and over that 1+1=3, there is no one challenging that falsehood.

In our case, the roof falls down on the media’s heads when they make up too much crap about Trump. He hits back. Hard. We hit back. Hard. We dominate social media. Fox Business Network is on our team along with a number of quality news sites.

We’ll never reach the lunatic community. Let them go. They’re parading around in vagina suits and wearing cat hats, fully believing they’re ‘making a difference’.

The moron community is largely out of reach as well. Those are the people who couldn’t name the Vice President if you put a gun to their heads. They don’t vote anyway, so who cares?

That leaves a lot of people who will become very tired of the constant whining, ranting and name calling.

Once the economy is roaring, we have full employment and ISIS is rolled up, Trump will begin to be thought of quite differently.

Careful—the term “level playing field” is straight out of leftist gibberish.

More importantly, you’re vastly underestimating Donald Trump.

But Reagan was never near to able to destroy the media. If Trump succeeds, which has a good chance, the media will be forever destroyed.

There was an avalanche of anger over Reagan too, and it wasn’t just the Leftists. The Republican Party wasn’t happy with him either.

They detest anyone who won’t play along with the One Worlder dynamic.

Was it this bad? No, but for the day it was pretty bad.

The Left has pretty much shot it’s load. I’m not convinced they have much left that can actually have an impact.

They are being seen more and more as a fringe group who have collectively lost their rational minds.

With all the harping they’ve done, now Trump is left to run the nation. And he’s going to run it like a fine tuned machine.

By two years in, the Left is going to have so much egg on it’s face, they’ll need white canes with red tips.

I honestly think we’re seeing a party in the death throws of it’s existence.

They may continue on as something else, like a mob violence centered cause group, but they are helpless right now to affect any major policies in the Federal government, and probably 30 or more states.

The media has outed itself as just nothing but childish idiots.

Look at CNNs ratings. They aren’t winning.

Is everything going to be easy? No. Will the Democrats stop? No. As Rush and others here are saying, let the Left offend even more people. These days, that’s all they’re good at. And they haven’t a single clue that is true.

Soros dumped a massive amount of money, and it bought him nothing but grief, and a terrible image.

I suspect that’s due to my dour Eastern European background. I hope I’m wrong and you’re right!
