Some Doctors Prescribe Food Instead Of Pills To Treat Certain Patients

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Pharmaceuticals may not be the best medicine for patients. Some doctors are now changing the way they treat patients – by taking them grocery shopping.

Physicians, such as Dr. Daniel Nadeau, are prescribing food rather than pills to fix the body.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all Americans routinely take prescription drugs, and 75 percent of all doctor visits involve drugs.

To counter the dependency on drugs, Loma Linda University School of Medicine incorporated a special emphasis on lifestyle medicine in which physicians learn how to prescribe food instead of narcotics.

In fact, there were record interests from doctors at the annual Food as Medicine Symposium on Feb. 11 and 12.

“We go to our doctors. We live an unhealthy lifestyle, and we just say: ‘Give me a pill for that,’ and ‘I want to be healthy’,” Nadeau said. “You might get your numbers down a bit, but you’re not going to feel the best that you could feel.”

Nadeau is part of the monthly Shop With Your Doc program at St. Joseph Hoag Health Alliance.

Each month, Nadeau roams the aisles of supermarkets, giving shoppers new ideas to chew on. . .

Not knocking medications, but I do believe a good diet can help us stay well, and perhaps help treat certain diseases.

Doctors prescribing drugs is a problem? Bizarre. this is equivalent to accusing barbers of unethical behavior for giving haircuts. If you want care for depression or anxiety that does it involve drugs see a priest and leave me the hell alone! LOL.

When physicians deny your prescriptions are causing the side effects you’re experiencing, check this website and read what other patients say about the same drug. Physicians, IMO, are clueless, yes, clueless about the drugs they prescribe. Prescription interactions are also dangerous, beware!

Lots of diabetes patients, for example, could get off their meds with the right diet.

One question you MUST ask when a doctor prescribes medication:

WHAT ARE THE CONTRA-INDICATIONS IF I TAKE THIS DRUG?

Also ask the pharmacist---they are very well informed about drugs.

REMEMBER: You have a right to refuse medication.

There are a huge number of foods and especially spices, as well as some OTC herbs that have been scientifically established to be just as good, or even better, than their pharma equivalents. For example:

Silymarin (active ingredient in Milk Thistle), is perhaps the “ideal liver drug”, protecting and healing it, as well as eliminating fatty buildup within. It takes some months, but can substantially improve the condition of the liver.

For diabetes, there is quite a laundry list.

Leading the pack is an Indian herb called Sylvester Gymnema, whose nickname is “the sugar killer”. As a tea, it mildly inhibits the sugar taste buds so that it doesn’t taste as good. But its real action is in the intestine, where it blocks the absorption of sugars.

Other spices that have a strong impact on blood glucose and other blood components are Ginger, Clove, Turmeric w/black pepper, Garlic, Cassia Cinnamon (disputed), and others.

To avoid diabetic complications, R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (specifically) against diabetic neuropathy in the extremities; Bilberry, which normalizes eye capillary pressure, reducing the odds of diabetic blindness; Vitamin B-1, to protect against excess albumin in the urine, reducing the odds of kidney damage.

There are many alternative therapies to pharma. But they should always be explored with an open minded doctor.

Nope. Nurses & truck drivers are mandated drug abusers.

NEVER become a truck driver.

Transportation Dept sells junk science to mandate that drivers be pill poppers hooked to machine gadgets.

Fake Science.

DOT are drug pushers, via Big Pharma,
and Big Medicine, sell expensive gadgets.

DOT kills children and drivers, on the road, but their special interests make money. Junk science.

Doctors are in business to sell pharmaceuticals. They’ll prescribe potassium pills and tell you not to eat bananas.
I have yet to find a doc who knows zip about nutrition or vitamin therapy.

Numerous doctors insisted I was depressed, and kept prescribing various antidepressants for me; I was not depressed, just exhausted and achy. Antidepressants made me it worse. I was sleeping 18 hours a day.
Doctor would just switch me to a different drug. Lost 5 years of my life. Husband was ready for a divorce..
Finally went online and researched my symptoms. Vitamin D deficiency.
Requested blood analysis for D. Yep. I didn’t really have any.
Since I am light skinned and sunburn easily, I tend to avoid sun. Over time this habit had resulted in severe D deficiency. Essentially the same as ricketts. People in Alaska suffer terribly, it’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD.)
Now I take 10,000 IU of D3 and 500 mg magnesium daily. Plus, now hubby and I have our breakfast outside on the deck, in order to get 30 minutes of morning sunshine, which helps metabolize vitamin D.

One more food-as-medicine example: everytime a stomach bug goes around, my neighbors are puking and diharrea-ing for a week, running to doctors, filling prescriptions. Not me.
As soon as I feel a tiny queasiness in the gut, I eat some probiotic Greek yogurt. Clears it right up, no pukey, no runny.

I’ve talked to people who grew up in Europe and they tell me doctors often suggested foods and spices as alternatives to commercial drugs.

This raises another problem that impairs getting away from the drug industry - many supplements seem to cost around $1/per pill, such as a quality probiotic.
Medicaid patients get free meds, and many with insurance will just have a small copay for prescription meds - so these patients keep accumulating lifestyle diseases and maybe a couple dozen meds over the years, and many feel they could not afford to pay out of pocket for supplements, herbs, etc. Not to mention buying cheap fast food and starches.
Quite a trap.
