Boehner Says GOP Won’t Scrap Obamacare

Former House Speaker John Boehner made a surprising prediction on Thursday: Republicans won't "repeal and replace" Obamacare, a signature campaign pledge for years.

"[Congressional Republicans are] going to fix Obamacare – I shouldn't call it repeal-and-replace, because it's not going to happen," Boehner told an Orlando health care conference, Politico reported.

"I started laughing… Republicans never, ever agree on health care," the former speaker continued.

"Most of the framework of the Affordable Care Act… that's going to be there," Boehner said, using the formal name for Obamacare.

Boehner resigned in 2015, after a long period of disagreements with his conference's hardline conservatives.

As recently as Wednesday, the administration was vowing to "repeal" and "replace" Obamacare. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who replaced Boehner as speaker, is championing a plan titled "Obamacare Repeal and Replace."

"ObamaCare is a job killer. We'll repeal ObamaCare once and for all & eliminate its mandates, taxes & intrusion into businesses & your lives," Vice President Mike Pence tweeted Wednesday.

Pence used the term "job killer" to describe the law in a St. Louis speech Wednesday as well, vowing replacement for the health care law in remarks to a local company.

"President Trump and I want every American to have quality and affordable health care insurance," Pence said.

If I recall, Boehner thought moderation and capitulation was a winning strategy back in 2015 . I wonder how that worked out for him?

Boehner was repealed and replaced.

The same can be done for a law, if the will exists.

Bonehead may be telling the truth. The GOP has yet to put that repeal bill on Trump’s desk. They are lying to us.

This is no fault of trumps, it is GOPE treachery against the voters.

Republicans are cowards. Afraid to make a mistake. Cowards all of them. He is right, UNLESS Trump can beat and shame them into doing what they promised it won’t happen. It all depends on Trump’s ability to force Congress into doing what he wants otherwise they’ll do nothing and then run on doing it next time (and most will believe their lies; not me)

The GOP can't repeal ObamaCare. ObamaCare's biggest flaw is that it screwed younger/healthier people for the benefit of older people -- many of whom probably would have been uninsurable before ObamaCare.

Go back over the last few election cycles and notice which age/demographic groups voted for Democrats. Then notice which ones voted for Republicans.

Repealing ObamaCare would adversely affect a core Republican voting group. It's really that simple.

The good news is that eliminating the individual and employer mandates is probably all that is needed to destroy ObamaCare even if the rest of that abomination stays in place.

All those years that they knew Obama would veto, they voted to repeal it several times. Now, nothing. How stupid do they think we are?

In the late sixties humorous (but good) advice for the Vietnam war was ‘Declare victory and leave.’

It seems Boehner missed the savvy part of this cynical advice. If he was smart he’d call any flashy change he chooses ‘repeal and replace’. At least then he has a chance of fooling us.

If the GOP drops the ball on this issue, they can kiss their future electoral prospects goodbye.
