The Writing Center at the University of Washington is telling students that expecting Americans to use proper grammar perpetuates racism.
A press release put out by the University of Washingtons Writing Center argues that there is no inherent standard of English, and that pressure to conform to proper American grammar standards perpetuate systems of racism.
Linguistic and writing research has shown clearly for many decades that there is no inherent standard of English, claims the writing centers statement. Language is constantly changing. These two facts make it very difficult to justify placing people in hierarchies or restricting opportunities and privileges because of the way people communicate in particular versions of English.
The universitys Writing Center Director, Dr. Asoa Inoue, suggests that racism has produced certain unfair standards in education.
It is a founding assumption that, if believed, one must act differently than we, the institution and its agents, have up to this point, Inoue claimed. While overt racism is usually easily identified, more elusive are microaggressions, forms of degradation which manifest on a subconscious and casual level. As the statement reads Racism is pervasive. It is in the systems, structures, rules, languages, expectations, and guidelines that make up our classes, school, and society.

A college or university that has substantive control over its public image makes sure that all the subordinate units coordinate with administration officials on public release of information about the University as a whole.
I know very well what a college or university “center” (as in the Writing Center that released this) can often be. I’ve seen them from just on person as a point of contact for some specialized initiative or a program. Regardless, rogue center proponents can sometimes bypass protocol and do their own branding and publicizing.
The story is out on this one, but I expect the University will get some blowback on this and it will have to rein in this “Center.”
It’s “different from” and “other than,” NOT “different than.”
The more colleges keep turning out over-taught but under educated idiots the greater the opportunity for normal people who look and act in a civil manner and who can speak and write intelligibly.
Just the fact that you need a writing center at a university tells you all you need to know about the skills of the students. 8th grade level work. Stop funding these institutions.
It would appear that this website is going to come in much demand over the coming months . . . especially at the University.

The rules of football have changed over the years. I guess that means that football teams don’t need rules to play by.
Words have meaning - but if the dialect is so garbled that few can understand, then all transmission of comprehension disappears, and we have become the Tower of Babel all over again.
The Biblical version of that story ended so well.
At one time I worked with a large group of blacks, one of whom was an educated black lady who was also a well known local public personality.
She was one of the most well spoken, clearest and precise speakers I have personally known.
In both public speaking and in personal conversations her delivery and use of the language was impressive.
One day I happened to walk in unnoticed on a group of blacks who were having a loud raucous group conversation.
They were speaking in what you might think of as black street idiom or gutter ebonics.
To me most of what I heard was barley understandable gibberish.
Imagine my surprise when I saw that one of the central speakers was the same lady who spoke such precise "white English".
She was holding forth in language that you would usually associate with uneducated black ghetto street people.
As time went by I learned that she and the other blacks could turn their "white" or "black" speech on and off like a faucet depending on the audience.
We have educated ourselves into imbecility M. Muggeridge
I doubt the destruction of the education system have not occurred by accident
Now we have a malable uneducated populace that has no sense or understanding of history, inability to analyze facts and positions and thinks by feeling. They are easily led and believe they are the most intelligent populace ever. Leaving God out of the picture leave one exposed to believe fallacies instead.
What could go wrong?
Indeed. I may find a way to use “different FROM!” on my tombstone; I feel very strongly about it.
Malleable.
Couldn’t agree more.
Yep. Well Ebonics is racist. Just saying
But let’s not mention the profound racism inherent in refusing to teach children standard American English. The motivation in refusing to teach them is racist and demeaning (based in the belief that they are not sufficiently intelligent to pick up proper grammar). The result of not teaching them effectively suppresses them from ever achieving any level of success in their lives.
The university should fire this racist professor ASAP.

Free Republic declares proper grammar required.
I guess the importance of proper english depends upon whether one is hangin’ wit da homeys on da corner; or drafting a document or writing a speech. Inoue is just dumbing down the requirements to further pamper the snowflakes.
Da cat be wacked.
I do not formally know grammar, but I can pick out three subject-verb constructions in that sentence.
“It” and “is”; “one” and “must”; and “we” and “have.” The last two are separated by a clause (at least, I think that’s a clause there between the commas).
That sentence is of the long and convoluted type that I often find myself writing. In most cases, however, I go back and break my original long sentence into shorter, more easily managed, chunks.
