Jong-nam assassination: Four North Korean suspects have fled Malaysia, say police

KUALA LUMPUR: Police today confirmed that the four main suspects who allegedly engineered the assassination of Kim Jong-nam have fled the country.

They were identified as Ri Ji Hyon, 33; Hong So Hac, 34; O Jong Gil, 55; and Ri Jae Nam, 57, all hailing from North Korea.

They were believed to have fled Malaysia on Monday, Feb 13, the day Jong-nam was killed.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim however, declined to reveal the destination the suspects were headed to.

Noor Rashid said police are also looking for a North Korean national Ri Ji U (also known as James), 30, as well as two unidentified suspects also believed to be North Koreans, to aid the investigation.

On Friday, police arrested North Korean national Ri Jong Chol, 47 at a condominium at Kuchai Lama, here. He was alleged to be one of the masterminds behind the case.

Noor Rashid confirmed are treating the death at the Kuala Lumpur International Aiport 2 as a murder case. However, he said police cannot confirm that the deceased was indeed the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"We need the next-of-kin to come forward and verify his identity. Police also have to base our assessments on scientific evidence (DNA tests) to confirm.

"As for now, he is identified as Kim Chol, aged 47, from North Korea based on his passport," he told a packed press conference at the Federal Police headquarters in Bukit Aman, here today.

On the cause of death, Noor Rashid said police were still waiting for toxicology and pathology reports which are expected to be ready in the next few days.

Fratricide is murder.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before Kim Jung-un had his brother disposed of. Contenders to the crown will not long be tolerated.

Communism is developing in to the new monarchy. The Kim clan is royal family of North Korea. The politics there can be compared to that of the medieval royal families of Europe with all of the court intrigues and maneuvers for the crown.

Blood will flow as long and Kim Jung-un feels his crown is insecure.

I don’t see that happening.

North Korea is a pawn of China. They exist to be a proxy threat to the United States.

North Korea presents a threat to the US and our allies. China uses NK to bring the US to China for help in dealing with them.

Unless the flood of starving refugees from NK to China becomes unmanageable I don’t think China will do anything to NK.

SK says NK did do it, see BBC. Also, a good discussion was in the forum yesterday on all of this.

This other article has comments saying Jong-Nam was China’s man. So, this may not be some mild incident for the Chinese.

It is hard to conclude otherwise. Still Jury is still out on how serious China will be this time around. The past patterns have been that N. Korea does something to upset China, China tightens the screw on N. Korea, and after a while, China slowly walks back to their "status quo." Situation is now different in that "Crazy" Trump and "Mad Dog" Mattis are in charge. They see that Trump means what he says. So keeping N. Korea around is becoming costlier. If China believes that Trump will stay the course and drive up the cost of China coddling N. Korea, they will change for real.

Shutting down N. Korean coal imports may be a step in the right direction, but as I said, China can walk back from it later. We have to convince them that they will pay a huge price if they go back to their old pattern.

Kim Jong-nam had been held in reserve. He and his uncle Jang Song-taek were more in line with China such as more market-oriented economic reform. It is still unclear how serious China was to remove Kim Jong-un and install Kim Jong-nam. It does not appear that China was actively undermining Kim Jong-un. Rather they keep Kim Jong-nam around "just in case."

The recent turn of events, that is, the election of Trump, changed the situation, I think. Kim Jong-nam has been a loose end which needs to be taken care of someday, but it cannot be postponed any longer. The possibility of Kim Jong-nam installed as some anti-regime exile group is no longer as remote as it was. If you search N. Korea-related posts at FR, there is one article I posted which says that Kim Jong-un asked Kim Jong-nam to return to N. Korea voluntarily but he balked. The message was delivered to Kim Jong-nam via N. Korean diplomats who had face-to-face meeting with him this year(January and early February.) If true, this triggered the chain of actions leading to his assassination.

The Norks already have. China Suspends All Coal Imports From North Korea (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/18/world/asia/north-korea-china-coal-imports-suspended.html). In the article; "Some analysts have speculated that the killing may have infuriated Beijing because Mr. Kim was considered a pro-Chinese candidate to replace Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, should the current government in North Korea fall."

Could be the beginning of the end.
