Killings across the Richmond region soared in 2016 to the highest level in more than a decade, with African-Americans suffering the greatest loss of life at 81 percent of all victims.
Homicides in the region’s four cities, three towns and 16 counties with a collective population of 1.26 million jumped 24 percent, from 98 in 2015 to 124 last year — the highest tally since 2005, when 132 killings occurred, according to a Richmond Times-Dispatch analysis of regional homicide data.
The distressing loss of black lives continued at a disproportionately high pace in 2016, with 101 of the 124 victims, or 81.4 percent, identified as African-American.
That’s the second-highest percentage since at least 2010, when the newspaper began tracking the race of homicide victims and their assailants. The highest rate, 81.6 percent, was recorded in 2015.
The percentage of black victims leaped from 2014 to 2015 and dipped by only a fraction last year.

How will they blame this on white people?
Around six years ago in Richmond...some black university student walked into some nightclub in the area, and just accidentally bumped into some gal...slightly spilling her drink. A confrontation occurred, and the university student was killed there in the club. My associate brought this up...he lived down in Richmond and drove daily up to the Pentagon to work.
His wife felt that Richmond was a safer place to raise a family than Fairfax or Arlington....which I questioned at the time.
The general problem in Richmond is a high level of illicit drug usage and general acceptance by majority of residents in the city.

In reality, it is the propensity for making bad decisions, smothered in poor to zero impulse control, that creates and sustains their poverty.
The high murder rate, (giver & receiver) are those bad decisions.

Black culture is more violent for a number of reasons. Liberals and their egalitarian ideas centered on race envy, social programs that breed dependency, their war on the nuclear family, and their suppression of capitalism and economic growth pretty much ensure violence.

And way down in the last part of the article it finally states that only one of the black deaths involved a white killing a black. Hmmmmmm.

But every act you cite, has been supported and funded by Republicans throughout the the last fifty tears, even those years with Republican majorities.
Folks like to think that the federal war on the black family was all from the left. Quite the contrary, it was a completely bi-partisan effort.
And to be brutally honest, the dependency programs and family destruction were approved overwhelmingly by white supermajorities in Congress.
Whether “well-intentioned” or not the truth is the white conservative you may have been voting for all along is just as quilty as the liberal for providing the means by which the black family holocaust has occured.
Correction: Illegal drugs also cause bad decisions, leading to murder & mayhem. I think the psychological impact of these illegal drugs causes impaired logic function which cannot control primitive emotions. It is a big part of the equation causing the physical violence, the law breaking and the self destruction.
It is true that poverty makes people susceptible to the big tax free money made in the illegal drug market. It does not explain why people take such a big gamble with prison time and loss of life at stake. Nor does it explain why these people are so oblivious to the impact on themselves and those around them.
I believe that the use of these illegal drugs puts people into a grip that destroys their self discipline and the collateral damage takes its course big time due to impaired decision making coupled with the lack of strong moral character. That gamble is taken because poverty and the rules of welfare have made the family unit dysfunctional and unable to build that strong moral character which resists the seduction of drug money and drug use. Take the illegal drugs out of the equation, and people will have a chance to better their lives and the lives around them.

Crime is an economic decision. Take the Ted Bundy crazy types off the table for a second, but when jobs are scarce, and wages low, you make the economic decisions to sell drugs, steal, and sell stolen goods. These activities have occupational hazards and risks of getting shot.
Drugs and violent gangs is not really much different than Prohibition in the 1930s when bootlegger gangs shot up their competition for turf and market share.

The Author of this article would like it so. You can just tell he is completely seething under the surface. It’s all Whitey’s fault somehow, someway.
It is beyond tragic what has happened to the black family and to black communities. What has happened to them, I would not wish on my worst enemy.
What is it? Is it the lack of fathers and stable families? Is it the culture? Is it in their DNA? What the hell is it?
This is universal among black communities across the entire USA. You can’t find a large black community where everybody is just married, highly educated, has stable families, is working, is getting ahead, is all solid middle class.
Racism doesn’t explain it. I know of countless black immigrants in the SF bay area from all manner of African nations who come to the USA and thrive, graduate college, are valued hard workers and managers, have stable families, and stockpile their net worth as they move up the middle class ranks.
What a tragedy. I have seen American blacks eat their own for 60 years now. When does this stop? How do we stop this tragedy? This is insane and it needs to end.
President Trump has promised to address the problems inner city blacks face. I pray to the Lord he makes some kind of advances here, but he can’t make very good inroads without black leaders in those cities calling out the people in them to do their part to raise and educate their children, and work hard at their jobs, and stop looking to easy fixes through crime.
Hate Bill Cosby all you want but at least he called out black people for being their own worst enemy and not lifting a finger to fix their plight.

You can clearly see the process of "bad choices" in young children, way before external factors have started to stack up.
A child that is not properly corrected at a young age, will most likely continue to seek immediate gratification into adulthood. What is wired into a child's brain is very difficult to undo.
Virginia has become a blue state.

Very true. Poor parenting, combined with the self-destructive effects of drug use cause the violence and mayhem of these drug gangs. What is most unfortunate is these gangs replace the support they would get in the family unit. In these communities, the family unit is broken. That adds to the poor values system they already have. These communities will need lots of work putting the broken family unit together.
The irony is that Douglas Wilder is black and was elected Governor of Virginia serving from 1990 to 1994. The media fawned over him just like they did BHO. Descendant of slaves. Blah, blah, blah ...
Subsequently, he was Mayor of Richmond from 2005-2009.
