680 Cubans Returned to Island Since End of 'Wet Foot, Dry Foot'
NBC Miami ^ | Feb 18, 2017

About 680 Cubans have been returned to the island from various countries since then-President Barack Obama ended a longstanding immigration policy that allowed any Cuban who made it to U.S. soil to stay and become a legal resident, state television reported Friday.

Cuba's government had long sought the repeal of the ``wet foot, dry foot'' policy, which it said encouraged Cubans to risk dangerous voyages and drained the country of professionals. The Jan. 12 decision by Washington to end it followed months of negotiations focused in part on getting Havana to agree to take back people who had arrived in the U.S.

Cuban state television said late Friday that the returnees came from countries including the United States, Mexico and the Bahamas, and were sent back to the island between Jan. 12 and Feb. 17. It did not break down which countries the 680 were sent back from.

The report said the final two returnees arrived from the United States on Friday ``on the first charter flight especially destined for an operation of this type.''

Florida's El Nuevo Herald newspaper reported that the two women were deemed ``inadmissible'' for entry to the United States and placed on a morning flight to Havana.

Wilfredo Allen, an attorney for one of the women, says they had arrived at Miami International Airport with European passports. The women requested asylum and were detained

Fighter Jets Cause 'Sonic Boom' in Weston and Nearby Cities The repeal of the ``wet foot, dry foot'' policy was Obama's final move before leaving office in the rapprochement with the communist-run country that he and Cuban President Castro began in December 2014. The surprise decision left hundreds of Cubans stranded in transit in South and Central America.

Before he assumed the presidency on Jan. 20, Donald Trump criticized the detente between the U.S. and Cuba, tweeting that he might ``terminate'' it.

Clearly people also risk life and limb crossing the southern border but we encourage them to come and collect the goodies.

Cubans tend to vote more conservative, however, so no problem sending them back to be Elianized.

Yes, let’s send motivated people back to a communist country to be executed. So, you think Obama did a good thing?

Really?

The petulant, vindictive jackass just recently reversed the longstanding policy that permitted legal status to the Cubans that washed ashore. This is quite different than the longstanding illegality of the other aliens crossing into the States.

I agree with you...if Trump doesn’t act soon to reverse this, the Republicans will have a difficult time holding Florida. We need the Cubans on OUR SIDE!!!.

They came out in great numbers to vote for him.

Without them he would have lost Florida and the White House.

I also read that several Cubans are stranded in Mexico that were on their way to the U.S. before Obama changed the policy. The Mexicans are treating them horribly, deporting them back to Cuba and some of them curiously missing during detention. When they called family in the U.S., the telephone numbers were obtained and then the families kept getting calls from Mexicans attempting to extort them by telling them they had to pay money or their families member would be killed.

So refugees shouldn't be allowed into our nation? That's a pretty extreme position. Do you think the brave guys who work with our military or CIA as interpreters or local assets should also be denied entry as refugees and left behind to be jailed or worse?

It has long been the policy of the United States to accept genuine refugees from tyranny. Barack Obama turned back genuine refugees from Cuba and other communist nations in favor of unvetted Syrians and other Muslims from areas where he fanned the flames of local wars. We should repair his error, not continue it.

Why can't you fly over to Syria and defeat ISIS using a spare baseball bat and a couple of molotov cocktails?

I suppose that’s what you would have said of the German Jews that tried to flee here.or the Christians from the ME. You must miss Obama.

I say we treat the illegal Mexicans here the same and see how they like it.

The 2 women who were returned from the US had European passports. We’re they actually Cubans?

They should sue.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said these people have a right to come to the US.

Unless you can prove they’re a danger.
