Harward turns down Trump's national security adviser offer, sources say

President Trump's first choice to succeed the departed Michael Flynn as national security adviser has turned the job down due to family reasons, sources close to the situation told Fox News late Thursday.

One source told Fox that retired Navy Vice Admiral Robert Harward "really wanted" to do the job, but ultimately decided that he could not.

A senior administration official said that Harward's acceptance of the national security adviser post was contingent on the agreement of his family. The official said Harward's wife and other family members wanted him to remain in the private sector.

Harward retired from the Navy in 2013 after a career spanning nearly 40 years. Upon his retirement, he became chief executive officer for defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin in the United Arab Emirates.

There was no official comment from the White House. Harward had been due to meet with Trump Thursday night.

At a news conference earlier Thursday, the president said he had "somebody that I think will be outstanding for the position" of national security adviser, but did not mention any names.

A former Navy SEAL, Harward served as deputy commander of the United States Central Command under Gen. James Mattis, who is now defense secretary. He quickly emerged as the favorite to replace Flynn after the latter resigned Monday night, ending days of speculation about his fate following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about his discussions with Russia prior to Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration.

Bring back Flynn.

From what I can tell he’s been exonerated, and the leaks have been a coordinated (and felonious) campaign by Obama holdovers.

National Security Advisor is purely Trump’s choice. No Congressional approval is needed.

The scandal here is:
(1) Obama used the national security apparatus to spy on his political opponents during a Presidential election.
(2) Intelligence officers leaking top secret sigint to settle political scores.

If he doesn’t, Trump will find another person to implement his vision.

Trump has a vision?

All high achievers have a vision.

Sports figures study their movements as if from the outside, knowing exactly what they want from their body beforehand, and following through as close to it as they can.

Business people like Trump, have a grand vision. So to presidents.

Trump is probably as close to holding our vision as any president in our lifetime.

Natl Security Advisor salary is around $200k, and you have to live in a high cost of living swamp. He probably ears several $M a year, after a 40 year military career. I think he made a reasonable decision.

reasonable for who? just himself. What kind of real patriot thinks of himself/family first?

I think Trump should pick some one who really understands the fight we are in as a nation in this world today. If Harward backing out, he does not have a clue the fight we are in and would not do best to keep us safe.

At least there's one reasonable person posting today. Those who have never served in the military cannot fathom how many moves his family had to make over a 40 year period. The stress that puts on a family is unreal.

Add to that, his family would be under unwelcome public scrutiny.
