Asplundh Tree Execs Charged With Running Undocumented Workers Scheme
Phillymag.com ^ | Feb 15, 2017 | Victor Fiorillo

Willow Grove-based Asplundh Tree Expert Co. is huge, privately owned corporation with more than 36,000 employees and estimated annual sales of $3.5 billion, according to Forbes, which counts it as one of America’s largest private companies. But now, Asplundh finds itself the recipient of some very unwelcome attention thanks to charges just filed in federal court.

An Asplundh vice president, Larry Gauger, 45, of Wayne, has been charged with visa fraud and conspiracy relating to his work at the company. Two other Asplundh managers have been charged as well, according to the Department of Justice, but their names have yet to be released.

According to a charging document filed in federal court in Philadelphia on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security audited Asplundh’s employment records and determined that some of its workers were ineligible to work in the United States. The employees were fired.

Homeland Security determined that approximately 100 of those employees had been working in a division managed by Gauger. The feds allege that Gauger instructed his team’s supervisors and foremen to accept working credentials that they knew to be fraudulent and illegally obtained.

Gauger is also accused of directing his managers to rehire under false identification employees who had been fired as a result of the Homeland Security audit. Investigators point to two specific instances involving undocumented immigrants who presented bogus Social Security cards. The charges allege that Gauger knew that the Social Security cards were “forged, counterfeited, altered, falsely made, or otherwise procured by fraud.

You obviously have no idea what the construction business is like. Stay at the Burger King, it is safer.

Asplund contracts with governent entities so they most likely need to pay prevailing wage rates.

I highly suspect this to be true. There were tons of Hispanic workers working around here after a major wind storm, all who were working for Asplundh. Most could not read or understand English. My friend owned a bar/restaurant and these workers would come in for lunch, couldn't read the menu so friend and I both read it for them.

Was that B.T. or A.T.?

(Before Trump or After Trump)

I use temporary field help sometimes for geology work. Their are a few local colleges that have kids, but they are ususaly just for the summer. But then they sometimes know someone, etc. But it can be tough finding guys for such part-time work. And they don’t need any particular skills other than to show up and work hard and long days. I only had one guy that was a waste. He started out okay, but after using him off and on for about three years he turned into crap (late, lazy, etc.). Drugs.

I’m guessing for construction it is getting difficult because the industry seems to have been taken over by Mexicans. Although most of the ones I’ve seen working are hard workers. But I have no idea if they were legal or not. But - seeing a young white guy in construction is getting rarer and rarer.

Bout time. They do a lot of contracts for the state in PA, and it is ALWAYS all Hispanic crews who look very “native” and speak no English. They seem nice enough, and hard working, but I have always wondered where they come from, and if they are legal or on some sort of special visa program.

At 49 bucks an hour you would have more applicants than you could talk to in a month if you were in Ga. And I am well versed in outside work, it is all I have ever done.

$75/day is starting construction pay for a newbe/board toter and ditch digger. 100 a day gets someone with some mechanical, electrical, or carpentry skill. These are all US citizens, no illegals.

We’re getting back to ten years ago or so when there were several high-profile cases of exec’s getting prison time for encouraging the hiring of illegal aliens.

HooAhh!

Story says the charges were just filed, based on a previously completed audit, and even after the audit, the company rehired illegals known to be using fraudulent docs.
IOW, the original “raid” happened awhile back, under Obama.
That xenophobic fascist white nationalist bigot. Shame!

Ok $392/10hr = $39.20/hr. Not bad. Where I live he’d be getting 100 people banging his door in the first hour.

In Austin people with advanced degrees would be knocking down his door and offering their daughters.

Here in Minneapolis you might get someone to show until noon for a hundred bucks. On a government project they would be there until 9 am.

There’s that intellectually dishonest term for illegal alien, “undocumented immigrant.”

They’re not undocumented, clearly. They have all sorts of fraudulent documents, this is obvious. This has real costs for the people whose info is being used for fraudulent purposes, a cost generally not recognized by those shilling for illegals.

“I have a small construction company. It will stay small because I cannot find anyone who wants to work. It is the same with anyone I talk to who is in the biz.”

Absurd. You are simple not willing to pay what the labor market will bear. If you only offer the wages Mexicans will work for, then yes, you won’t find anything but Mexicans.

Lame argument.

“Too many people just don’t want to leave the couch...._
How true.
Here in MI it must be WaaaaaY too easy to collect SSI.
We live in a small community and 3 of the guys hereabouts are drawing SSI. Yet they can cut their own firewood, haul rocks for wife’s flower beds, fix vehicles, etc.
What with the “right” doctor, lawyers etc. they don’t have to work. That’s for schmucks.
One, now passed, (overindulgence in “home-grown” remedy, marijuana) managed to injure himself 3 or 4 times before he finally succeeded in grabbing that “brass ring”..
I have a friend who works in training folks to be employed who bemoans this and all the other dodges they come up with.
I don’t have an answer, except that everyone on SSI be investigated but they are robbing those who pay as much as the illegals.
It would take an army of investigators to check them all out.

Yep, here in Michigan. They were working with our electric company to trim trees that were close to the wires. We have two big blue spruce trees out front. They were only suppose to top off the trees just enough to clear the wires.

I came home from work one day, one tree looked great, the other tree, they only cut the front of the branches on one side at the very top and left that rear part. Half cut tree on one side. I called electric company told them they need the tree company to come out and finish cutting the top off. I was nice about it.

Well, they came out next day. When I got home from work, I walked out to get mail (we live in country) and opened mail- box and there was a dead possum in it.

Hubby was out of town, called our post office and guy there came and removed it for me.

It was a very subtle message from supervisor of tree company due to the complaint.

I never said a word because we had a hunting dog outside in a kennel. Afraid they would poison him.
