A German Shepherd named Rumor won Best in Show at the 141st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

Rumor was a sentimental favorite of the crowd, having finished second in 2016.

This marked the end of a drought for the breed, which had last won in 1987.

I usually DO adopt but I have a 9 year old cat, and I’m not sure of the temperament of dog like a Shepard from a shelter when it comes to cats.

Sad what they've done to the conformation of German Shepherds.

Their backs used to be strong and straight when they were first bred. Now rounded.

You can get a beautiful German shepherd at your local GSD rescue for a whole lot less.

Look at some of our dogs at German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County. We do adoptions out to southern CA, southern NV, and western AZ.

This is true, but there are lines that have a straight back and breeders who breed for it, you just won’t find them in the show dogs. Mine are all straight back and sturdy like a table :)

I think some go to law enforcement but some just as regular pets - my GSD was very intense with high prey drive but a great pet, he would never have been a good therapy dog, that’s for sure!

Glad to hear it. The others are pathetic.

I understand...mine are a bit lower key than that, I always tell people my kids are overly active so I don’t want my dogs to be, hah.

Yes, it is unfortunate. The German show dogs are not any better, they tend to curve under. Here's one of my girls so that you can see what I'm talking about, mine are more of an old fashioned German Shepherds like from the 1950s before the angulation became much more extreme -

Eastern European Shepherd - they're great!

I got my dog from some Russians in the area. The parent dogs were from East Germany. They advertised them as german shepherds. When we talked to the owners, they said the parents were brought from Russia, and were considered East German Shepherds, and while the parents were “registered”, the puppies were not. That was ok way me, as I wanted a big dog, with a big bark (to scare strangers off), that was smart. $200, and I got Titan. Really smart, really a good companion, but hates the heat and loves the cold. A little research recently, and I see pictures of of the ‘breed’ Eastern European Shepherd - (VEO Shepherd). They were german shepherds bred in the 1930’s-1950’s in the USSR to be bigger, cold resistant Shepherds without the dysplasia problems of the GS. I looked at some of the pics after I read the description, and said ‘yep, that's him. Scary looking (his face looks like a mask with wide silver cheek fur), big (30” high at withers), REALLY long when he lays down, but loyal, doesn't bark needlessly (although he's spoiled and does his share of whining), loves to go out and roll in the snow (and hides out in the basement in the summer).

I'd recommend those to anyone looking for a Shepherd as a pet. He has no joint problems, only had ear mites when we got him, and at 7 yrs old had his 1st problem - staph infection on his chest. 3 wks antibiotics and he was just fine.

Mine had some weird medical issues. She chewed on a piece of straw, and somehow it went up behind her eyeball. Special dog eye surgery....

But she is mostly black with a little tan. She is a sweetheart, but scare the hell out of anyone coming in the house uninvited.

Easily the best dog I’ve ever had.

I will be out walking her and people stop to ask about her. And not people we are walking past, they stop their cars. It was a little weird at first.

Where I live, I don't walk past people unless they aren't supposed to be there ;-) Nonetheless, Titan has learned who my relatives are, and other than sounding the alarm that ‘someone is here’, he's ok with them. Strangers though, he scares the heck out of them, and the UPS guy. In the summer we like to hang out outside, and when someone wanders up my lane (a mile off the paved road to my house), which ends at my garage, I WANT him to be scary, and he is. Otherwise, he's a sweetheart. He's learned to play ball in the kitchen with me with 2 balls, he brings one back and drops it just as I throw the other one. He also bounced the ball for himself, when I'm online and won't play with him!

Our dogs could be siblings.

That is funny.

Are you sure they were Eastern European Shepherds and not DDR East German line? The EES from Russia were crossed with Caucasian Ovcharka (sp?), Black Russian Terriers, and other breeds from what I remember. I’ve had some DDR dogs (and some are in my lines) that were huge, supposedly before the wall came down some of the dogs utilized were massive. Not all, of course, but some. My big male who is going on 12 has some West German (touch of DDR), along with some various other lines and he’s 30” and 145 pounds . Would love to see a pic of your dog.

I don’t think so. The DDR Shepherd images I’ve seen are colored primarily in black and brown. Titan is black, blond, silver, and white, with a very straight back. He looks a lot like this one: https://images.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP.dJxyp3QV9skHmxPb0EHEMgEsCd%26pid%3D15.1&f=1

The DDR lines I've had weren't just black/brown, the one boy I had was a light sable actually. Here's one of the dogs I've produced that has some DDR (son of the sable dog I was talking about actually), they all have straight backs but are all purebred German Shepherds not the EES.

I could be wrong then - yours too looks a lot like Titan. The Russians (actual Russians, they spoke Russians at home and came here after the USSR fell) I got Titan from went to Russia to get their dogs, and got some for friends. Their own 2 dogs made pups together. I gathered that Mr Russian was not very happy about it, and had Mrs. Russian selling them as soon as she could to save on the cost of dog food.

Although they were living very lower-middle class, Mrs. Russian had all gold teeth - a real status symbol in Russia ;-) I understood their daughter (spoke english with a thick accent) to say that Mr Russian went back to Russia often, but their dogs were for protection. I didn't even WANT to know what he was doing going back and forth to Russia for that he needed 2 enormous Shepherds for protection!

I'll see if I can find a picture of him to freepmail to you. I'm a bit handicapped in that by having lost my laptop (which was still Windows Vista) to a power outage and being forced to get a Windows 10 replacement, so the restoration of my data is going slow...
