NYT’s Friedman: Flynn Resignation Shows Russia Hacking Was On Scale With 9/11, Pearl Harbor

FRIEDMAN: I share Mika’s real outrage on this issue. I don’t care what he told Pence. We only care what he told Pence because Pence went out and basically mislead the public on Face the Nation. The issue is what did he tell Trump? Did he and Trump actually cook up this whole thing after the Russians did not respond harshly to the eviction of their spies and diplomats? Trump actually tweeted out some positive encouragement of this. Did the two of them cook this up all along? It gets, Joe, to two other issues. The first is we have never taken seriously from the very beginning Russia hacked our election. That was a 9/11 scale event. They attacked the core of our very democracy. That was a Pearl Harbor scale event. Can you imagine if Hillary Clinton were where Trump was, what the right would be doing on this issue? This goes to the very core of our democracy.

I found the link below, and looked for it here at FR, but apparently no one has reported on this Senate vote by 97 Senators to sanction Russia some more. Someone want to post it??? Amazing so much unity on a single issue.

U N I P A R T Y !

Russia has pulled some things I detest over the last decade. That doesn’t mean they are acting out further at the present time.

During a lull like this, it’s an opening to develop better relations and try to steer it toward a more solid role globally.

Despite this, Congress seems hell bent on driving it further away.

This is very foolish IMO.

I’m not a big fan of Putin. I think he’s a bad player. I still think you try to develop better relations rather than worse relations.

It’s as if Congress is itching for war with Russia.

It is so pronounced, it’s hard to take it any other way.

Putin has not done anything in the last two years to warrant this type of action.

Here is a Reuters link on the Senate vote for Russia sanctions. The quote is from another Reuters article, because the one I was quoting from froze. Information is basically the same.:

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/06/14/u-s-senate-backs-legislation-to-slap-new-sanctions-on-russia-f/22223528/

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday for new sanctions punishing Russia for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, and to force President Donald Trump to get Congress’ approval before easing any existing sanctions.

The vote was 97 to two for the legislation, filed as an amendment to an Iran sanctions bill. It is intended to punish Russia over issues including alleged meddling in the election, annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region and support for the government of Syria in that country’s six-year-long civil war.

So it appears that 97 Senators feel that Russia meddled with our elections within the last year. Do you feel messing with our elections does NOT warrant this type of action? I also appears that they don’t want Trump to soften the sanctions. Thus if Putin does have dirt/photos/etc. to blackmail the President with, Congress appears to be taking away that power from Russia/Putin. So to paraphrase the quote of a Republican president of the past, the US can talk softly (Trump) and carry a big stick (Senate). Otherwise know as good cop/bad cop.
