The Oroville Dam Crisis Exposes the Flaws in Trump's Infrastructure Plan

Tens of thousands of residents fled Oroville, California, on Sunday after water levels surged over a spillway at the Oroville Dam. Traffic jams reigned on highways leading north from Oroville, where officials ordered people to evacuate at 4:45 p.m.

Oroville families, who made their way to the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico and other staging areas, face uncertainty in the coming days. By late Sunday night, water from Lake Oroville was no longer rushing over the top of the dam’s emergency spillway, thanks to efforts by California water authorities to increase the flow of water out of the reservoir. But the spillways sustained damage during Sunday’s flooding. Officials are attempting to measure that damage as they consider next steps.

“The dam is solid,” said Bill Croyle, acting director for the California state Department of Water Resources, during a press conference. “The control structure has been damaged.”

The problems started last Tuesday, when a hole opened up in the Oroville Dam’s primary spillway. The collapse in this main, concrete-lined spillway led authorities to take an unprecedented step by the end of the week, as heavy storms mounted. On Saturday, the state water agency opened up the dam’s emergency spillway for the first time ever. Its collapse would have sent a “30-foot wall of water” crashing out of the lake reservoir, according to the Los Angeles Times. The emergency spillway, also described as the auxiliary spillway, is more or less a hill that drains down into the Feather River.

A near-disaster in California probably wouldn’t be averted by the kind of privatized investment that the president has in mind.

But the 'maintenance' method used by the public entities did not avert the near-disaster, so let's continue that failed method, not Trump's method.

Our proven failure is better than Trump's predicted future failure.

This has nothing to do with Trump, or the feds at all, in any way, or at anytime....

this dam was from inception to completion a state of Cali project. There was no fed involvement in this project.

Making up outright lies just means you are a liar. No matter how many lies you tell, you are still nothing more than a dishonest liar. Telling the same lie a thousand times just means you are still just a liar.

The problem with this construction project will come to the surface in short order and the responsibility falls directly on the state of cali and the head idiot, moonbeam, who would dearly love to tell this same lie and blame it on Trump...

This is moonbeams problem from beginning to right now and on into the future...

If that dam goes the state of cali will have one hell of a bill. Next time they build a dam they will probably put rebar in the cement on the spillway....

Historical analogue...look up the San Francisquito dam (also known as the St. Francis dam). A terrible dam failure where hundreds died downstream. March 12, 1928

No, it exposes the flaws in Obama’s “infrastructure plan.”

You mean the one we paid a trillion $$$ for in 2019?

The nuttiness that I’ve seen around me during the last few weeks has been astounding.

No, they don’t believe what they are saying - they don’t even KNOW what they are saying. They are parroting talking points that they haven’t even analyzed, and don’t have the *ability* to analyze.

Today I heard a few young people saying that “we are no longer a democracy, because of Trump”. I told one of them that we aren’t a democracy, and never were. We are a Representative Republic.

She looked at me with blank eyes; probably didn’t even understand the term.

This goes far beyond/below Politics. On the one hand, we have refused to demand that our children be truly educated in American History, the Constitution, and the profound thought that went into our system of government. The responsibility to demand that education, was the parents’responsibility; many of them fell down on the job, leaving it to ‘government’ to figure out.

On the other hand, a large section of the populace have been infected with what I believe is an emotional illness, not a mental one. And it wasn’t some ‘floating virus’ that infected them. There was a plan behind it, a plan that is ongoing, even though many who are involved in it now don’t even know its origins, or how their unwitting collusion took place.

It’s a man-made dam in the three eyed mud packer’s habitat, and it’s in north conservative land.

You think the proggies care if it breaks?
