Germany's trade surplus hit an all time high last year as the country continued to export significantly more than it imported.
According to the figures, German exports climbed 1.2% to 1.2 trillion euros in 2016, while imports rose 0.6% to 954.6bn euros.
This left a surplus of 252.9bn euros, up from 244.3bn euros in 2015.

Deutschland uses the euro to essentially hide behind the Italian lira, French franc, Spanish peseta, Portugese escudo, Greek drachma, etc.
If the EU is picked off, Trump can get better deals with individual countries.

No wonder Merkel, the Urkle, is so content to have the EU remain intact
and keep trade at the same level without re-negotiation on German trade.

They are protectionist and we could learn a lot form them in this regard. Germany is no more protectionist than the rest of the countries in the E.U. -- all of which do not run trade surpluses.
