Russia, Iran Supporting Taliban to ‘Undermine’ U.S. Mission in Afghanistan
Washington Examiner ^ | 9 Feb 17 | Natalie Johnson

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said Thursday that Russia and Iran are supporting the Taliban in part to undermine the U.S. and NATO mission to attain peace and stability in the nation.

Army Gen. John Nicholson told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Iran is providing the Taliban in western Afghanistan with military and logistical support.

Tehran also is recruiting Shiite fighters in Afghanistan to fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, raising concerns that these militants will return and destabilize the nation, Nicholson testified.

Nicholson said Russia's involvement in Afghanistan has become "more difficult" over the past year, as Moscow has worked to "publicly legitimize" the Taliban.

Russian officials argue the Taliban is fighting the Islamic State while the Afghan government has done nothing, inaction they say threatens greater turmoil in the country. Nicholson said this is a "false narrative" intended to give the group credibility.

I mentioned that Russia would do this very thing when we started sending Manpads to the terrorists in Syria. We can hardly claim the moral high ground when we’ve helped arm and train the people who’ve killed a bunch of Russian troops in Syria.

1) what peace and stability in Afghanistan?
2) the government of Afghanistan is now under threat from ISIS and so is the wretched Taliban
3) the Taliban may be wretched but they are willing to help in the fight against ISIS which is even more wretched ... Thus a marriage of convenience is being arranged by regional powers to defeat ISIS
4) the Afghan government reached out fior Russian assistance after seeing what the Russians were doing vs ISIS in Syria .. Right now they have less to fear from the Taliban who,are their own than ISIS who,are externally directed and focused foreigners
5) even outside of Afghanistan is there any givernment in the world who has not seen the exposure of the obama- US role in actually supporting ISIS while only pretending to,fight it - it cost us a great deal,of money and a return of troops and military equipment to even keep Iraq from inviting in the Russians once they recognized our games
6) it is not Russia that has damaged the US role in Afghanistan. It is the US ineptitude that caused the damage. The Russian- Iranian role is a symptom of our rotten policy, not a cause .

Most of the putin posters are going to support Putin in all instances and not Trump since they’re really in favor of restoring the Russian empire. Their quarrel wasn’t and isn’t with Obama; it’s with the USA.

Sounds like they're more interested in stopping the bumper crops of opium from being grown in Afghanistan than they are about which bunch of Muzzies rules over the other Muzzies in Afghanistan.

The Taliban had come to terms with Russia and wasn't letting much in the way of IzLame Ick terrorists and opium go across Afghanistan and into Russia but since we've been there the highway for drugs and radicals is wide open all the way through the country.

One thing for sure, whining about what Russia is doing there now after our being there fifteen years doesn't make a lot of sense given the fact we don't have a damn thing to show for that fifteen years except body bags and lower street prices for heroin in the US.

Well he certainly set up the pins. No U.S. president has ever done so much to damage this nation as he has. The leftists won't acknowledge it either...

Obama has been courting the Taliban ever since his first election, even while they were killing the troops he ordered into Afghnanistan presumably to kill the Taliban he was trying to negotiate with

And the US was working with Pakistan which deserves its own spot on the list of terrorist supporting nations

How freaked up can a US government be??

Just because someone doesn't agree with you they're a Putin poster or supporter?

I had my got my fill of long wars with nothing to show for it except dead Americans and the free flow of opium when I was in VN.

If you think not wanting to waste American lives and treasure for such insanity is supporting Putin you're either nuts or a paid propagandist.

So you favor losing another war, like your Vietnam experience? How many 9/11’s would you be willing to have before you accept that we cannot let Islamists win?
