US Customs and Border Protection officers seized nearly two tons of marijuana packed in phony limes near the Texas-Mexico border last week, according to authorities.

The 3,947 pounds of weed came through a commercial shipment of key limes in Pharr, Texas, on Jan. 30, officials said.

The truck hauling the "produce" crossed the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge along the Texas-Mexico border near the Gulf of Mexico. Over 34,000 of the fake fruit packages were discovered by an imaging inspection system and narcotics K-9 team.

I have, within the last 8 months, discovered that I was drinking all wrong. If the first two ingredients aren’t fresh lime juice and demerara syrup, it’s not worth drinking.

*some exceptions noted

They should smuggle it in from Colorado. The borders are less heavily guarded.

The BIGGER CRIME is that there are limes coming from Mexico allowed to be listed as KEY limes. I thought Key limes have to actually be from the KEYS as in Florida Keys. BTW, I am overdue for a trip down to the Keys & indulge in some Key Lime Pie.

Too funny. Nobody told them that Key Limes come from the Florida Keys.

As someone that is familiar with narcotics work, I have to wonder why they even deal with these mules. They aren’t solving any problems, by arresting them and having some unnecessary court case. So what, an illiterate Mexican gets caught trying to smuggle all that weed. While all the attention was turned to him, 20,000 more pounds crossed the border undetected.

Why not just seize it, destroy it/burn it as soon as possible, do a biometric on the driver(s) and passengers, send them back south and move on to the next one. The current method certainly isn’t slowing down the Cartel’s. Why waste the money on these people.

Now, if it’s an American citizen, then by all means, let the system do its thing.

The alkaline soil of the Florida Keys gives a unique flavor to Key limes. BTW, when you mix the acidic Key Lime Juice with condensed milk, the chemical reaction causes a natural thickening of the filler sans baking.

If pot was legal there would be no profit in shipping it across the border like that

I fully support de-criminlizing it.

Potheads are rarely violent. Overuse make you stupid, but so does overuse of alcohol. Everything in moderation.

It has medicinal effects that NEED O BE STUDIED

(it stops hair loss too)

With pot being grown in Colorado, Washington and Colorado legally, I wonder how long we’ll need Mexican pot ...

Did the labels give them away? Or was it the cap dispenser?

Most of that is hydroponically grown and expensive. There's still a thriving market for cheap "ditch weed".

A pitcher of Mojitos after a few bong blasts will take the edge off, and limes are a key ingredient.

Ditch weed will grow quite successfully and propagate quite successfully on its own if it’s not pulled up or sprayed with herbicide. Or, at least it does here. There was a bit of a problem way back when, here at least, with people tossing the seeds out of windows of passing cars and it would literally be growing in ditches alongside the roads. In fact I believe that’s where the name arose. I don’t believe the seeds were being tossed for that reason, they were just being cleaned out and discarded, but “ditch weed” was the end result.

Ditch weed is commonly found in ditches along rural Iowa roads.
A quarter mile will net you a bushel basket of the stuff...

key limes are a type of lime native to the Florida keys but found elsewhere as well. There are different kinds of limes of different size, shape, tartness, etc. I had Key limes and Persian limes in my garden in south Florida as well as three different kinds of orange trees.

Key Limes?
First, a ripe key lime is Pale YELLOW, pale green inside. Not quite as big as a ping-pong ball. These bags of key limes they sell in the grocery sometimes are small undeveloped marbles.

If you have real ripe key limes you can get 1/2 cup of juice from 5 limes. Just enough for a pie. My favorite pie.
They have a unique tartness much stronger than a Persian lime.

Had one in my yard in Miami. Very tropical tree. Don’t even mention the word F-R-O-S-T around one. Oh, the thorns on them are similar to the spurs on a fighting cock. Bad
