Charlottesville, Groups Prepare Next Steps for Gen.(Robert E.)Lee Statue

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -The decision by Charlottesville City Council to move a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee is drawing cheers from supporters and harsh criticism from others.

The issue could end up being decided in a courtroom.

City councilors voted 3-2 Monday, February 6, to move the statue from Lee Park. City staff now has 60 days to develop a plan to remove the statue, and recommend where to put it. This process is estimated to cost Charlottesville at least $350,000.

“I think that this could become a whole new chapter in the city's public visible history about race and our public spaces,” said Mayor Mike Signer, who voted not to move the statue.

Wayne Wingfield says he wanted to get another look at the monument to the general before it goes away.

“It was put here in 1924, so why do you want to take it away now?” Wingfield asked.

He added, “It's part of history. It's not hurting nothing sitting there”

Councilors unanimously decided to spend up to $1 million over the next year to redesign Lee Park and Jackson Park in Court Square. As a result, Lee Park will be renamed and a new memorial to Charlottesville's enslaved people will be installed. . .

Charlottesville, the PC progressive College town. I’ve seen it get become the second Fairfax of Virginia over the years. Led by UVa’s Political “genius” Larry Sabato.

As a result, Lee Park will be renamed...

King Park? Sharpton Park? Jesse Jackson Park? All possible, but I am betting on Obama Park.

Reminds me of the Russian penchant for renaming entire cities, depending on who is the current “Hero of the Revolution.” Throw in a little airbrush and Photoshop action to wipe away the uncomfortable historical truth every few years...et voila!!...everything’s all better.

How about Coons Corner ?
Robert E. Lee was a great man . But he should have never ordered Genr’l Picket to take that copse of trees. J.E.B. Stewart shoulda never gone joy riding around south-central PA & he shoulda taken Little Round Top & Culp’s Hill . Things would be different now .

Don’t know about the park, but if they rename the main drag through the park, MLK Blvd, that stretch of road will have the highest crime rate in the county.

I always thought Lee should have fought the union more like Washington fought the British. I’m not expert in any of this, but maybe more defensively and less pickets charge type offensive actions.

Maybe they could move it to St Louis where he designed the levies that protect the city to this day.

Maybe they could give it to West Point where he graduated at the top of his class.

Maybe they could give it to Washington and Lee University where he served after the war.

Maybe they could give it to Fredericksburg, or Chancellorsville, or the Peninsula, sites of some of his greatest victories.

Maybe they could put it on the Mexican border where he served with distinction in the Mexican war.

Maybe they put it on the surrender grounds in my hometown of Appomattox where he decided against Jefferson Davis call for guerrilla war.

Having traveled through, visited relatives, hunted and fished and eaten in around Charlottesville over a 50 year period, I would suggest renaming the park “420” or something befitting the current wave of dreadlocked, poncho’d stoner’s dropout’s and throwback’s who seem to infest this once ideological city.

Much like northern Virginia and Williamsburg, and Virginia government, Charlottesville too has become overridden by Northern retirees and their spawn which have thoroughly managed to marginalized the locals and befouled the landscape with liberal/leftist thought and deed. Sadly, this situation is only getting worse.

Are these leftists again trying to rewrite history? Or do the Democrats want to copy the Taliban, who destroyed Buddha statues?

Or is this just part of the hysterical meltdown of leftists in this country?

Stupid is as stupid does.

I hear ya.
Standing at that split rail fence and looking over the mile wide field of Pickett’s Charge I thought, ‘What was he thinking?’

Guess I don’t understand old military tactics.

He should have taken Washington at the outset or his assuming command . Too bad they wasted time on Johnston in the beginning . He was always a ninnie .
Taken Washington and sent Lincoln to St Helena’s

My daughter just moved to Charlottesville for a job. It’s Berkeley east over there. Moonbats and snowflakes abound. She was afraid to go to work the day after the election because she knew she’d be the only one smiling.

These people are stark raving morons. Virginians died for Virginia, Lee and Jackson and these buffoons are trading their history and birthright for a filthy bowl of oatmeal.

Memphis has the same issue with Gen Forrest statue, only they have the additional issue it is a double GRAVE SITE. And must have family permission to move it. And they aren’t giving it. It’s been defaced several times by the feral blacks in Memphis with spray paint.
