2006 10.7.5

That`s as far as i can get. So, bought a new 2016 and it failed right out of the box.Sent it back, keeping my ‘06 because it never hiccuped.

10.7.5 is basically unsupported now with no more updates.Macpostfactor + Clover = el capitan in a late’06.

XP still gets the job done. Text processing and audio processing worked great on 486 100s with Win95.

Yes, but a 2006 *what*? Also, any computer maker can make an occasional lemon, what did the one you returned do?

Every Win from XP on does a good job of managing devices, and running the filesystem and network. That’s whatb n OS does. Debian (free) on a $35 Raspberry Pi does it just about as well.

Holy war over Windows? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

iMac late 2006 / 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo /4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM /Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

2016 21.5 inch iMac. I suspect either HD or some other hardware issue. 3-5 minute start up vs. 45 sec. for my 2006. Tried all the Utilities i could to repair. Eventually so bad only Safe Mode. Tried to install the newest OS Sierra , Nothing.

They were nice enough to take it back since i wrestled with past the 2 week full return policy ONLY because i stated it was faulty right out of the box.

So when i get the time i`ll try the hack install of el capitan. Worst case is back to square one, still have an original snow leopard disc

I installed W10 on an 8 year old Dell 1525 laptop that originally came with Vista, then W7 then W8. The only limitations are graphics. Games like candy crush will not work. No other limitations. Your information is wrong.

Didn’t say you couldn’t install it. Did say you’d have problems.

And those ‘minor’ graphics limitations can be *huge* problems. My information comes from upgrading machines to Win10 over the past year under contracts. Lots and lots of ‘fun’.

I got a Linux laptop about 6 months ago.

Linux leaves a lot to be desired. It is still in the 1980s, but the GUI programs are similar to Windows. I still cannot get videos such as FoxSportsGo, ESPN, etc., to run and I have tried every browser that will load on Linux.

For basic websurfing, email, general wordprocessing, etc., Linux is okay.

I am slowing learing the ‘under the hood’ stuff. I bought several Linux books last week, as most of the Youtube instruction videos are horribly bad.

I just hope my Win7 laptop and desktop hold on. But I think Microsoft will force it out eventually. XP just did not have the power to handle heavy web graphics and video, and that forced me to move to Win7. I briefly tried out Win10 and did not like it.

I did read a comment recently from a Win10 expert who admitted Win10 was primarily designed for tablets and touchscreens and not ‘real’ computing.

I have Windows 10 on a 2007 (10 years old) Dell desktop. Copuld have run it stock but decided to add a DirectX 12 capable card ($80) and it runs like a champ. Much faster than any Mac I’ve ever used. Don’t try to elevate your choice of OS by telling lies about another.

I have dropped Windows as a primary OS, the problem with Linux though, is that all the apps are free and worth what you pay for them.

Things like tiled printing and simply running a scanner that you could do in Windows 20 years ago are not available or work so poorly it isn’t worth the effort in Linux.

So I run Linux on new hardware and keep older versions of Windows running in virtual box so I can actually get things done.

There was a time that MS was actually encouraging people to download and run illegal copies of VISTA. It was so bad that they couldn’t give it away after word of mouth sank it.

Probably bad HD or Fusion drive. I installed about 250 of them under contract last year at one site and we didn’t have any issues. Hadn’t heard about many others in the local consultant community or online so I think you just got a bad one. Surprised you didn’t just get another one.

As for running anything later than 10.7.5 on that thing... Don’t. Intel screwed up the memory controller on that generation of chips and it can’t address much more than 3GB of RAM even with that full 4GB worth of chips you have in it. I had that one, did the same hack (at the time to 10.9) and wished I hadn’t. 10.9 and later is very unhappy with 4GB and less RAM if you do anything but extremely light usage; it really wants 8GB or more.

Yup, XP looks absolutely amazing compared to Vista - but that’s not really that hard to do.

One nasty little surprise - it took (IIRC) four years after XP came out for Microsoft to find out that it was physically impossible for an XP machine to stay running for more than 49.7 days as it would crash at that time when a memory register overflowed. The reason it took so long was because nobody had managed to get a Win XP machine to stay up long enough to be on for 49.7 days until then.

Win 7 and later at least managed 497 days uptime before they overflowed.

Yes, but what spec was the Dell? I deploy and support Windows, MacOS and Linux for a living - and the local experience plus my own concurs that the average 8 year old mainstream PC is not ever going to be able to run Win 10 acceptably. It usually ends up being a horrific mess.

Microsoft already tried a WinRT only platform with the original Surface and it completely flopped. Nobody wanted it. Only when they capitulated by going to an Intel processor with full back compatibility did the Surface 2 sell like hotcakes.

Windows Universal Apps is a bust. Nobody wants a WinRT phone. The latest version of Windows 10 Enterprise doesn’t even support WinRT anymore (nor does Windows Server 2016 - it was recently removed). Windows Store for Business that doesn’t even offer WinRT apps at all.

The article is BS.
