An attempted armed robbery turned deadly Thursday when the would-be victim pulled a gun and fired, killing one of the robbers and injuring another, police said.
Billy Dean Dickerson, 19, of St. Louis died Thursday morning when he and Perry A. Richardson, 23, tried to rob a 70-year-old man who was dropping off a friend at her house in the 200 block of Abbott Street in Venice, police said. The man is a Vietnam War veteran from St. Louis.
The veteran and his friend were sitting in his car when Dickerson pulled his vehicle up next to the driver's side, police said. Richardson, who was sitting in the passenger seat, pulled out his gun and demanded money.

What a delightful ending to a potentially tragic event!!
I would like to offer my thanks to this veteran for his service to country — both in Vietnam and in St. Louis.
As for the non-fatally shot perp, a felony murder charge awaits and "He faces up to 60 years in prison."
So, at 23 now, by time he's healed, court system, some portion of the 60 years..., he be prime meat for "Sons of Barack" whose parents haven't even been born yet.
Now this represents gun control at its finest. He hit exactly what he was aiming at. I love stories with happy endings.
One of the attributes of good writing is never needlessly complicating things.
Why does there always seem to be “attempted” or other adjectives or modifiers appended to what should simply be a simple statement of the facts. This was an armed robbery. By definition, they are ALWAYS “attempted”, so what’s the point?
Another oft-repeated clause is “botched” robbery, or “robbery gone bad.”
Does the concept of a robbery “gone good” then, exist? Is a non-botched robbery something we should all strive for?
I’m not sure why exactly, except these things annoy me.
